The past year marked many significant milestones for the Monitor National Marine Sanctuary. This report takes a look at several of the most significant.

Battle of the Atlantic

To document historically significant shipwrecks that were tragically lost in the Battle of the Atlantic during World War II, the Monitor National Marine Sanctuary, in collaboration with its partners, conducts summer maritime archaeological expeditions off the coast of North Carolina. The project is dedicated to raising awareness of the war that was fought so close to the American coastline and to preserving our nation's maritime history. 2008 Expedition
This expedition documented and surveyed three German U-Boats: U-85, U-352, and U-701

2009 Expedition
This expedition focused on the Allied ships lost during the Battle of the Atlantic with an in depth look at the HMT Bedfordshire.

2010 Expedition
NOAA divers and partners surveyed and photographed visible sections of several merchant vessels that were lost during the Battle of the Atlantic.
