Mount St. Helens 32nd Eruption Anniversary
May 18, 2012 marks the 32nd anniversary of Mount St. Helens' catastrophic eruption, the first volcanic eruption in the conterminous United States since the 1915 eruption of California's Lassen Peak. In June of 1912, a 3-day explosive eruption at Novarupta on the Alaska Peninsula near King Salmon produced the largest eruption of the 20th century. It created the spectacular Katmai caldera and the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes, which early explorers called the eighth wonder of the world. Preserved as a National Monument in 1918, and now part of Katmai National Park, the eruption created an outdoor laboratory that has captivated scientists and sightseers alike for 100 years. To commemorate this significant century old eruption, the USGS Volcano Hazards Program along with many Alaskan partner agencies will be holding several events throughout the spring and summer.
