Island writer nominated as Poet Laureate
GALVESTON — Jim Boone has garnered a nomination as U.S. Poet Laureate. He does not expect to be awarded the title, but he’ll gladly take the role of a footnote.

Fishing: The Reel Report By Capt. Joe Kent Monday, anglers enjoying a day off from work received an added bonus as a wind switch to the southeast turned on the action. January 18, 2012 Monday was a nice day to fish protected areas, as a moderate southeast wind had the open bays chopped up. January 17, 2012 The wind switched to the southeast and began sending warm Gulf waters back into the bays. That is good news for fishermen for two reasons. January 16, 2012 Soon, we will be hearing a lot about trophy trout fishing, which usually takes place around Galveston from late winter through early spring. January 15, 2012 Friday was another in a series of days when conditions just were not inviting to fishermen. January 14, 2012 While extreme low water levels might not be good for fishing, they do offer an opportunity to survey areas for channels and deeper waters. January 13, 2012 Ultimately, the rains should help fishing, as we have been experiencing unusually high salinity levels in the bays. January 06, 2012 January is known as boat show month and is an excellent time to start thinking about that new or used rig you have been wanting.
