WEST GLACIER, MONT. – Officials at Glacier National Park announce that Helen Seay and Robin Peterson have been selected for this summer’s Artists-in-Residence Program. These artists were selected from among the more than 35 applications received for the two slots. Each artist will work with Laura Law, the park’s Education Specialist, to create artwork suitable for use with elementary school students.
Helen Seay, who will be at Glacier through July 14, holds a BFA in Graphic Design from the University of Georgia. Seay is also working toward a BFA in Scientific/Medical Illustration with an emphasis on Natural Science. Seay will create line-art illustrations suitable for children to color as well as natural history field sketches for use in pre- and post-visit materials for teachers.
Robin Peterson will be at Glacier from July 24 through August 18. Peterson will create an educational mural depicting the variety of habitats found in Glacier National Park and how these habitats change from east to west and from low to high elevations. Peterson has a veterinary medical degree from Washington State University with advanced training in surgery from UC, Davis. She completed a certified graduate program in Science Communication, Illustration at UC Santa Cruz and has been a full-time painter and illustrator since 1993.
Law’s Education Specialist position is funded through a grant from The Glacier Fund. As Education Specialist, Law works to enhance the educational potential of the park by providing curriculum to be used by teachers prior to and following a visit to the park. Law also periodically holds workshops for teachers who want to bring their students on field trips to the park. Upcoming workshops include “Habitats/Wildlife” on August 21, “Forest Processes” on August 23, and “Earth Science in Glacier,” August 25. Contact Laura Law at 406-888-5837 for more information.
