The ICES Journal of Marine Science publishes articles, short
communications, and critical reviews that contribute to our scientific
understanding of marine systems and the impact of human activities.

The Journal serves as a foundation for
scientific advice
across the broad spectrum
of management and conservation
issues related to the marine environment.
Oceanography, marine habitats, living resources, and related
management topics constitute the key elements of papers eligible
for publication. Integrated studies that bridge gaps between traditional
disciplines are particularly welcome.

The scope of the Journal has been broadened to include economic,
social, and public administration studies to the extent
that they are directly related to management of the seas and are
of general interest to marine scientists.
Proceedings of ICES-sponsored symposia constitute an integral part
of the Journal and observe the standards set for regular
papers.
Submissions for regular issues
Articles for ordinary volumes are submitted online through the IJMS Manuscript Central website or by clicking “Submit electronically” at the Oxford Journals website. Read the Instructions to Authors and follow the Online Submission Instructions; then press Submit Now! Direct questions to Søren Lund at the ICES Secretariat. During the online submission process, you will be asked to supply the following information.
- In a cover letter, you must provide a written justification as to why you believe the content of the paper is relevant to the Journal, highlighting the paper’s research significance and its primary scientific contribution.
- Include names and contact addresses (including e-mail addresses) of three appropriate referees who have not been associated with the research being published, or closely affiliated with any of the authors in the past five years.
- Confirm that the material is original, is not submitted elsewhere, and has the full written approval of all co-authors to submit.
- Confirm thatthe author has adhered to general guidelines for the ethical use of animals in research, the legal requirements of the country in which the work was carried out, and any institutional guidelines.
If ethical considerations arose in the course of the study, the author should describe in the manuscript how those considerations were addressed. In exceptional cases, where unresolved ethical questions remain, the manuscript may be sent to appropriate experts in the ethical use of animals in research for additional refereeing. In such cases, the decision as to whether the manuscript is accepted for publication remains with the Editor or, in the final instance, the Editor-in-Chief.
Failure to adhere to these requirements will result in the rejection of your submission.
Text and figures should be in separate files. Preferably, manuscript texts should be submitted in MS Word format, although WordPerfect will also be accepted; other formats may be accepted on prior agreement, but do not send manuscript texts in PDF format.

Submission for Symposium issues
Articles for ICES Symposium proceedings volumes should be sent to the designated Guest Editor, who will furnish instructions on the submission of both paper and electronic versions.
Cover letter
In a cover letter, you must provide (1) a written justification as to why you believe the content of the paper is relevant to the Journal, highlighting the paper’s research significance and its primary scientific contribution. Further, you must (3) confirm in the cover letter that the material is original, is not submitted elsewhere, and has the full written approval of all co-authors to submit. Failure to adhere to these three requirements, and if relevant (4) below, will result in the rejection of your submission.
Electronic manuscript files
We work almost purely electronically – it is therefore essential to have editable electronic files. A hard copy is not required. Note that text and figures should be in separate files. Preferably, manuscript texts should be submitted in MS Word format, although WordPerfect will also be accepted; other formats may be accepted on prior agreement, but do not send manuscript texts in PDF format without prior agreement. Figures may be submitted either in one file or in separate files in the various formats accepted by Oxford Journals. For ICES Journal editorial use, a version of the figures in MS Word, MS Excel, or PDF format is also required. Authors are strongly urged to read the IJMS Guide for Authors and IJMS Word list.

ICES Journal History
Published from 1926 to 1991 as the Journal du Conseil, it
is a continuation of the former Publications de Circonstance
series, which first appeared in 1903. In 1991, the title of the
series was changed to the ICES Journal of Marine Science
(with the subtitle Journal du Conseil), and handling of the
publication was contracted to Academic Press, which became an Elsevier
imprint in 2001. Elsevier published the Journal through 2006; from 2007 the publishing has been taken over by Oxford University Press.
From 1927 through 1991 (Volumes 2–48), there
were three issues to a volume; from 1992 through 1994 (Volumes 49–51),
four issues; from 1995 through 2003 (Volumes 52–60), six issues; from 2004 through 2005 (Volume 61–62), eight issues; and starting in 2006 (Volume 63–), nine issues.
ICES Symposium proceedings have been included as special numbers
since 1995 (see ICES Marine Science
Symposia for a list of titles). Copies can be ordered from the
ICES Secretariat.
