Survey: U.S. Protestant pastors reject evolution, split on Earth's age

By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor

America’s Protestant pastors overwhelmingly reject the theory of evolution and are evenly split on whether the earth is 6,000 years old, according to a survey released Monday by the Southern Baptist Convention.

When asked if “God used evolution to create people," 73% of pastors disagreed - 64% said they strongly disagreed - compared to 12% who said they agree.

Asked whether the earth is approximately 6,000 years old, 46% agreed, compared to 43% who disagreed.

A movement called Young Earth creationism promotes the 6,000-year-old figure, arguing that it is rooted in the Bible. Scientists say the earth is about 4.5 billion years old.

The Southern Baptist Convention survey, which queried 1,000 American Protestant pastors, also found that 74% believe the biblical Adam and Eve were literal people.

“Recently discussions have pointed to doubts about a literal Adam and Eve, the age of the earth and other origin issues," said Ed Stetzer, president of LifeWay Research, a division of the Southern Baptist Convention, in a report on LifeWay’s site. “But Protestant pastors are overwhelmingly Creationists and believe in a literal Adam and Eve.”

The phone survey was conducted in May 2011, sampling ministers from randomly selected Protestant churches. The survey had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.2 percent, LifeWay said.

A 2010 Gallup poll found that 40% of Americans believe God created humans in their present form, versus 54% who said humans developed over millions of years.

74% think Adam and Eve were real people?Yikes! I believe these are the same people who want to get rid of the department of education so they can destroy their own kids credibility in the real world..... You know, where people believe reality.I get it. Evolution is hard to understand, with the genes, DNA and mutations and all that while the bible has it all on page one.Maybe they are not stupid-just lazy. I think I would rather be a monkey.

None of these posts are about the actual subject! Come on!
I'm writing cos I just wanna say .... I dont actually believe that that many pastors actually believe what it says. It MUST be some form of corruption of the 6000 year thing. I'm genuinely concerned. I think churches can be awesome and really hold people together when they most need it. But if they are truly genuinely preaching such obvious garbage as this, then I'm concerned. We have to stand against such ignorance holding people back. That's not EVEN laughable. Tell me it's some revisionist view of the 6000 year creation myth – please. It's embarrassing. I still wanna have faith that people of faith aren't actually going full against knowledge of any type........

@Cody, I really would like to know what bee got into your chaps about me. As I said in another post, if you doubt me and my position here, perhaps we could "wager" a bit on it. I'm willing to put my money up, I KNOW where I work and how old I am. Any chance you want to take me up on it? Of course I'd love to see a black jewish rabbi.

all i really need to say is fossils but lets be a bit more wordy about this shall we...ok, here we go, nice and easy, the earth is 4.5 billion years old and we came down from the trees at around 6 million years ago thats a time span of 4.4 billion years and some odd 994 million years where many other creatures ruled this earth for longer and in more harmony then us. We are just babies. Heres an excerpt from something i worte years ago – "It helps to underline how unimportant we humans really are in the overall scheme of things. In the sense of geological time, we have only just drawn our first breath." Creating this illusion that we are as old as the planet and rule it due thanks to a god that which created all things but we are special above all for it gave us its image – thats a god complex to the T ... and not to mention how conceded of anyone to believe that we are special...the cone snail of australia is far more special then us... how about the trees that live for thousands of years while we have a mere average of 80 years to live but yet spend the time doing things that knowingly shorten our lives – we aren't only not special but a rather destructive and ignorant species that will if the planet doesnt kill us off first destroy the world in which we live.

hippypoet, why don't Christians take the real topic of why you folks want to stay spiritually and emotionally stunted without righteous outcomes because you only learned 1st to 2nd grade of Jesus' truth. Science uncovers our universe and they did a good job uncovering how you Peter/Patricia Pans of the world that refuse to grow up, hide behind them to reject Jesus and not ever growing up.

      Amen.

Rick W. The price of oil has nothing to do with its origins. That is an economic issue. We are running out of oil (and coal and natural gas) becuase we are using it so fast. If we used it at a slower rate than it gradually formed, we wouldn't. No, St. Helens did not produce petrified trees. that takes hundreds of thousands or millions of years – for the minerals to replace the original biological matter.

Look, you can try all you want, but your Iron Age sky-fairy is not an explanation for anything.

Your low self esteem issues is sad to see did you get an ego boost with that stupid comment. You should seek professional help. Emotional maturity is defined as: the ability to express one’s own feelings and convictions balanced with consideration for the thoughts and feelings of others. It seems you still need to learn that lesson based on your posts on this blog.

If a person rejects evolution and evolutionary science, shouldn't they refuse all medical treatments whose discoveries and current practice is a result of evolutionary science? If YEC Christians were fully aware of all the modern technology based on evolutionary science they would have to come to grips with their ridiculous views on the age of the earth/universe.

Most of our foodstuffs are the result of farmers practicing the basic tenets of evolution – even if they don't realize it.

So these fundiots should also give up eating any modern grains, veggies, fruits, or meats.

Time to face the ugly truth. Fundamentalism is a man-made, pseudo-Christian cult, the same label they like to pin on groups like the Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses, Seventh Day Adventists, etc. Not a single one of their sects can trace itself directly back to early Christianity, either doctrinally or as an organization. The Baptists date back to 1609, and most groups have fissioned off since then. Every single one is an attempt to reconstruct what the founder and his followers IMAGINES Jesus taught, usually very selectively. All fundamentalist groups are MAN-MADE. Not a single one is authentic Christianity.

I hope you are not implying that Catholicism is a true representation of Christianity either, just because Catholics like to claim that Peter was the first "pope" or some such crap. Catholicism is a cult that makes up all kinds of phony baloney along the way (praying to saints, purgatory, indulgences that of course you have to BUY, etc.).

The definition of Christian is to live your life in the image of Jesus Christ.
Faith in miracles, divinity, resurrections, and other fantastical flourishes isn't required to live a life of pacifism, charity and humility.
