The 2011 film awards season is underway, with the Bafta longlist and Writers Guild Awards nominees announced last week.

The New York and Los Angeles film critics and the European Film Academy have already awarded their prizes for the best films of 2011, and the Golden Globes ceremony is just around the corner.

Meryl Streep's portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady is winning plaudits, but she faces stiff competition from Michelle Williams (My Week with Marilyn) and Tilda Swinton (We Need To Talk About Kevin) - all three have five nominations so far.

Jean Dujardin (The Artist) and Ryan Gosling (Drive/The Ides of March) head the best actor category, while The Artist, which harks back to the silent film era, leads the nominations for best film and director (Michel Hazanavicius).

This year we'll be tracking all the major nominees and winners in the run-up to the Oscars on 26 February (just like we did in 2009 and 2010), in categories including best actor and actress, director, film and screenplay.

Those categories that have been left out - like cinematographer, short film and editing - have been ignored because they aren't presented in sufficient award ceremonies to warrant a comparison.
