A team effort by federal and local authorities confronting rising crime in Savannah led to 144 arrests of violent fugitives in the area since February, police and U.S. marshals announced Wednesday. Those arrested during the six-week crackdown included 13 suspects wanted on murder charges, authorities said. Others had outstanding arrest warrants for crimes including aggravated assault, robbery, rape and child molestation.

ATLANTA (AP) - Georgia has set an execution date for a man convicted of killing a woman in 1996. Department of Corrections Commissioner Homer Bryson on Wednesday scheduled the execution of Kenneth Fults for April 12. Fults was convicted in 1997 of killing Cathy Bounds, who was shot five times in the back of her head. Prosecutors say Fults killed Bounds after breaking into her house during a weeklong crime spree. The U.S. Supreme Court in October turned down an appeal from Fults. His lawyers argued racial bias had prevented him from getting a fair trial. Fults' lawyers had gotten a signed statement from a juror in which the juror twice used a racial slur when referring to Fults, who's black. Another Georgia inmate, Joshua Bishop, is set to be executed March 31.

A movie director was released from jail Wednesday after serving a year behind bars for the death of a crew member killed by a train during filming of a movie about singer Gregg Allman. A Superior Court judge ordered former "Midnight Rider" director Randall Miller to be set free after a hearing at which prosecutors agreed Miller's good behavior had earned him early release halfway through a two-year sentence.

Southbound traffic on University Boulevard West shut down about 3:45 p.m. Wednesday at Powers Avenue due to a collision between a Jacksonville police cruiser and a sport-utility vehicle.

Police say a woman has been arrested after her 2-year-old son was shot during an apparent accident in a motel room near Atlanta. DeKalb County police Maj. Stephen Fore tells local news media that Valencia Burks was arrested Wednesday. Fore says Burks was at the motel in Lithonia when her son found a handgun in her purse early Monday and accidently shot himself in the abdomen.

Joseph Michael Sharkey, 36 of Reston, Va., pleaded guilty on March 22 to assault or intimidation of a flight attendant and faces up to 20 years in prison now after the Jan. 31 incident on a JIA-bound flight.

Robert Roy Macomber inappropriately touched a 6-year-old girl multiple times in 2014 and was arrested for it. Now he has been sentenced to twoi life terms in prison on the charges of sexual battery and lewd or lascivious molestation.

Kennesaw police have arrested two men who they say fired at a person's home after a road rage incident. Media outlets report that a man driving March 15 was stopped at a light behind a Honda Civic. When the light turned green and the car didn't go, he honked.

A stolen pickup truck ditched in the South Brunswick River resulted in a three-hour-long muddy mess. The Ford pickup truck was between the Interstate 95 and Georgia 303 bridges and about 100 yards from the boat ramp where it had been ditched.
