The NOAA ship Fairweather departed Kodiak, Alaska, today on a mission to survey remote areas of the Arctic where depths have not been measured since before the U.S. bought Alaska in 1867. Over the next two months, Fairweather will conduct hydrographic surveys covering 402 square nautical miles in Kotzebue Sound in northwestern Alaska.

NOAA satellites are tracking wildfires across the U.S., providing critical information to NOAA’s incident meteorologists and the firefighters who are battling the blazes. Wildfires have scorched more than 4.7 million acres this year, according to the latest statistics from the National Interagency Fire Center.

Many rivers in the upper Midwest and northern Plains remain above flood stage. The U.S. National Weather Service says the threat for more flooding will continue through the summer; flooding could rival the Great Flood of 1993. The Federal Emergency Management Agency has been working proactively with these states for months to prepare for and respond to flooding.

AJ Umbdenstock ‎93' flood wasn't a man made flood though. This could have been largely reduced if some choices weren't made in my opinion. But whats done is done. Too bad we can't divert some of this water to the south and southwest.

Harry J DiDomenico Don't feel bad Todd. They left out the station for here KBTL aka Battle Creek MI yet they have something for a tiny town called Albion east of here. Makes no sense at all. Battle Creek also happens to be the 3rd largest city by area in the whole state of Michigan as well.

The definition of what is “normal”—temperature-wise—is changing. According to the 1981-2010 normals, temperatures across the U.S. were, on average, approximately 0.5 degree F warmer than 1971-2000. Normals, which are updated every 10 years, are often used by local weathercasters for comparisons (for example, “today is 5 degrees warmer/cooler than normal”). Scientists, industry, and agriculture also use normals.

Antony Van wow weather is climate now. I guess the world didn't exist before 1950? Why is it blue on the Florida side? Don't the tropics warm. Was it a El Nino or La Nina year? Was the Roman warming, Minoan Warming, Holocene Climatic Optimum any warmer?
