Fund for a Sustainable Future

The Union of Concerned Scientists is now seeking $12.5 million to support an increased effort over the next five years on diminishing the impact of climate change, reducing nuclear weapons, and restoring scientific integrity to federal policy making. The Fund for a Sustainable Future will enable UCS to strengthen its position as the leading national independent scientific voice and provide assets to support operating and capital needs in each of the areas.

For each issue, funds will be used to produce peer-reviewed research on the problems and newsworthy technical analysis on cost-effective solutions, to organize respected scientists and researchers from around the country, to educate media, policy makers, constituency leaders, and key segments of the public, and to engage key stakeholders.

To support the Fund for a Sustainable Future is to support addressing the most critical challenges of our time.

Kurt GottfriedA MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

No one knows exactly what kind of world our children will inherit. But one thing is clear. The quality of their lives will depend on our ability to act now to bring the best science to bear on confronting the grave challenges of our time. I refer to the increasingly urgent need to:

The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) has long worked to foster citizen action based on science to address these critical issues. We have accomplished much. But there is a great deal more to do—and a special urgency in getting it done now. As never before, UCS must escalate our efforts to bring sound science to bear on these increasingly serious challenges, thereby creating a nationwide demand for change.

Consider the situation before us. Global warming now threatens to disrupt our lives in potentially catastrophic ways. Nuclear weapons pose the gravest and most immediate threat to human civilization—and the risk of nuclear terrorism grows daily. The integrity of federally funded science has been violated to an astonishing degree for political purposes— threatening the very foundation of crucial decisions affecting our future.

Fortunately, we now have a real opportunity to foster change. There is now broad public recognition across the nation that we must act immediately and decisively on climate change. The growing consensus is that reliance on nuclear weapons—a means of deterrence in the Cold War—must be reversed to prevent their proliferation. And the change of administration in Washington, D.C., offers hope that action will be taken to restore and protect scientific integrity in policy making.

As America’s leading source of sound scientific information on the health and safety of our environment, UCS is in a strong position to lead the effort to meet these challenges.

UCS is the national organization linking unimpeachable scientific research and technical analysis with effective citizen advocacy. We are precisely the group whose leadership is essential to advancing the demand for change on these great issues of our time.

For nearly four decades, we have forged an unblemished reputation for our independent analysis of key issues, our strong national network of leading scientists, and our strategic campaigns to win policy victories in the halls of power.

Now UCS is launching a fund raising effort in support of programs to meet the new challenges posed by climate change, nuclear weapons, and scientific integrity. In partnership with our allies, we will work as never before to advance the major science-based changes which alone can help create a sustainable future.

Please join us in this significant endeavor.

Sincerely,
Kurt Gottfried
