IRDR Conference 2011

Our knowledge of natural hazards is steadily growing as science and technology develop rapidly, yet disasters continue to devastate people’s lives and the resources they depend on.

Are we focusing on the most important problems?

Are we digging deep enough to uncover the root causes of disasters?

Are people actually making decisions based on our findings?

No single discipline can answer these questions.

IRDR Conference 2011 provided a platform from which IRDR launched trans-disciplinary research alliances aimed at in-depth, practical disaster risk reduction studies.

IRDR Conference 2011 took place in Beijing, China, from October 31 to November 2, 2011. The conference was hosted by the Integrated Research on Disaster Risk International Programme Office and the China Association for Science and Technology.

The theme of the conference is “Disaster Risk: Integrating Science and Practice,” focused on the following topics:

  1. Characterization of hazards, vulnerability, and risk
    1. Identifying hazards and vulnerabilities leading to risks
    2. Forecasting hazards and assessing risks
    3. Dynamic modeling of risk
  2. Understanding decision-making in complex and changing risk contexts
    1. Identifying relevant decision-making systems and their interactions
    2. Understanding decision-making in the context of environmental hazards
    3. Improving the quality of decision-making practice
  3. Reducing risk and curbing losses through knowledge-based actions
    1. Vulnerability assessments
    2. Effective approaches to risk reduction
