Wanted: Shipmates of the Week

A year ago, Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Bob Papp introduced the Shipmate of the Week series as an opportunity for members of the Coast Guard family – active, reserve, civilian, auxiliary, retirees, family members, and Coast Guard supporters outside our service to be featured on Compass.
We kicked off 2011 with the story of Petty Officer 2nd Class Ryan Anderson and his contributions to the service as a tactical pursuit coxswain ensuring illegal drugs don’t make it to America’s shores.
In the year since, we’ve also brought you the stories of Shipmates from inside and outside of the Service like civilian Abby Sunderland, who turned a failed around-the-world sailing attempt into an opportunity to educate young people about boating safety; Petty Officer 3rd Class Timothy Mirandi, who spent his first weekend as a qualified small-boat coxswain responding to seven different distress calls; Chief Petty Officer Kristin Werner, the first woman to reach the rank of Chief Gunner’s Mate; and the USO for its support of Coast Guard men and women deployed in service to our country.
As we begin 2012, we ask you for your support in helping us identify and honor Shipmates of the Week. Perhaps you’d like to see us recognize the local member of your community who volunteers their time to teach boating safety. Maybe you have a concerned neighbor who turns a vigilant eye to the water in support of America’s Waterway Watch. You might even want to thank a Coast Guardsman for saving your life.
If you know of a Shipmate that has done something great for the service, its missions or the public, please submit your nominations to Coast Guard Compass using the “Submit Ideas” link to the right of this post.
