The personal testimonial by Crystal was far more then informative. That sir, is good radio. Drama isn’t often a factor of this show. Please consider allowing, or even guiding, personal stories that are likewise informative and charming. Great show today!

The inability to get individual golf clubs doesn’t make any sense. Considering the number of angered golfers that wrap clubs around trees and snap them over thighs, you’d think they’d go broke buying full sets of clubs. And would they really just hang on to all those incomplete sets?

For years I had wished that there’s a show like this; now, moved to Dallas just last month, I can’t believe there it is!

For starter: Please send the words out to charity org. that send people address labels.  I’ve gotten thousands of them through the years and they keep sending.  Consider how few people write letters these days, this is such a waste.

I didn’t hear if there was an answer to places to donate sewing supplies, patterns and fabrics, but I recently donated to Berkner high school.  They have fashion and interior design programs there, and both need resources.  It’s also tax deductable.  Just give them an idea of how much the supplies are worth in writing and they’ll send you a receipt. The teacher I worked with was super-nice.  Came out to the parking lot to get the boxes since I had a baby in the car and everything.

In response to the question on 7/8/11 about person wanting to buy a Jeep… Collins Brothers Jeep in Wylie, TX sells Jeeps of all years that they have looked over, restored, etc.

I recently heard of a place where abandoned bikes were sold in the Dallas Fort Worth area.  However, I was unable to write it down as I was driving at the time.  I’m wondering if anyone out there knows when, where, or a website where I can get that info.

how does the U.S. compare to other countries regarding the percentage of it’s population  incarcerated?  How does Texas compare in the US?

Regarding the number of years or months courts  give as punishment for various crimes, such as drug related crimes – is there a scientific or studied  basis for this?  (such as studies that would show less  recidivism  based on specific length of time incarcerated, or is it just made up?

For a long time the design of reel mowers only allowed them to be effective on short, fine bladed grasses like hybrid bermuda.  There are recently some design innovations that will allow them to be used on taller, coarser grasses like St. Augustine.  Fiskars is one company with this new design.  I have not tried one yet, but supposedly they work well.

Where can I get a high quality, hand-made T-shirt quilt made? I heard that there is a really good shop in Arlington that specializes in hand made quilts… I have a couple of hundred Hasrley shirts that I want made into several King-size quilts.

Re Marfa Lights.   I don’t buy the car headlights explanation.  I have seen the Marfa Lights several times.  On every occasion they will frequently travel above the horizon into the air and change colors.  I have read the headlights explanation which is based on placing a vehicle along the road and flashing its lights along with traffic frequency along the road.  This does not explain all of the phenomena that I have observed.

  • Sam

On the road, along with white and yellow markers, I see blue markers too. Why TXDOT put blue marker on the road and what it implies?
One thing I can think of is I mostly see blue markers near the intersection but I have also seen them at places which is not near the intersection.

Great show! I am looking for a place to get Louqats in DFW area. Louqat is a delicious, juicy fruit, the size of a cherry tomato, and usually sells in bunches on the twigs. I believe it is native from Japan, China and SE Asia.

Would be great to get info on where I can purchase it in Dallas/Fort Worth area.

  • Jim

I’m really interested in picking up abandoned bikes, too. I’ve never been able to get a better answer than the place on Harry Hines on Thursdays. Nothing like the surplus I hoped for, it was more like an abandoned pawn shop.
U-North Texas has a surplus everything sale on Tuesdays. Includes bikes. http://pps.unt.edu/content/public-saleThey’re open on Tuesdays 9-1.

  • Jim

This is the only explanation I’ve heard that makes sense, heard from a geologist in the area many years ago. That region is slightly geographically active. There’s also a lot of quartz in the ground. The motion and pressures cause a lot of static electricity, and what we see is basically lightning from the ground. I don’t know why it doesn’t make noise like regular lightning.

  • Jim

In Texas law, bicycles are vehicles, just like cars. But it’s a lot harder to start from a full stop on a bike, and many drivers don’t recognize bikes as vehicles. It’s a toss-up on safety, energy, and time for most riders, who will slow down a lot and put a foot down in case we need to stop fully. Many riders are very rude and just blow through a stop, but many also watch the traffic around us, it’s our lives at stake.

Is there a woodwork shop or garage in Dallas, TX where you can rent space and tools for Do-It-Yourself projects by the hour or for a couple of hours? That, or a wood-work shop or garage where they’ll rent you the space and let you bring your own tools and work on your project?

Regarding why 7 days in a week — it is not always that way. Here is from Wikipedia

The term “week” is sometimes expanded to refer to other time units
comprising a few days. Such “weeks” of between four and ten days have
been used historically in various places.[1] Intervals longer than 10 days are not usually termed “weeks” as they are closer in length to the fortnight or the month than to the seven-day week.

In some Russian systems a week was 5 days

Gaius Iulius Caesar Augustus Octavianus (Augustus) is buried in a mausoleum built near the Tiber on the northern edge of what was then called the Campus Martius.  You can still see it, although it is somewhat overgrown and unkempt.  It is near his restored Ara Pacis (Altar of Peace).  It is worth a visit.  As for other Imperator/Caesar I do not know.

When you see a Blue Reflector in the street if you look around you will find there is a “Water Hydrant” close buy, they are placed there so the fire department can easily find the Hydrant in the dark and during bad weather.

Jack, I think the place you are referring to is this little shop on Bowen Rd.  http://www.basketsandquiltsbybless.com/  I have a friend who likes quilts and said their stuff is lovely.

  • Andrea

Regarding why there are seven days in a week:  Not positive, but I strongly suspect it has to do with the 28-day lunar cycle and 7-day increments will mark the quarters.  This would have been very important in agriculture and a consistent way to mark the passage of time.

There’s a park and trail in Irving off Riverside Dr that has a plaque for an old elm tree. Why does this tree have a plaque? Is it b/c it’s so old, I guess? If so, how old is it? Thanks.

Back in the early 1980s there was a song that played on the radio about the Dallas Cowboys. I just found that it is called “Sunday Cowboy” by John Welch Forbes (I think) and it’s from Odessa Records. I’m looking to find this. So far the only thing I can find for it is from youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQXwoU45IAw Any one know if this is available still?

Re: Wakame question: You can also find wakame (and other types of seaweed) at Central Market. They sell packages of already cut wakame that you just need to soak in some water before adding to soups, etc. The selection is not as extensive as an Asian grocery store but if Central Market is closer to where you live it can save you an extra trip to the Asian market.

Cows and other herd animals sometimes align themselves to the magnetic field (pointing magnetic north or magnetic south) of the Earth as well. There was a scientific study done showing this is 2008.

Is there anyplace/any business in the metroplex that buys Lenox china?

  • gmarie

Does anyone know what happened to the sculpture garden at the Trammel Crow Center on Ross?

  • Ragmop

Howdy!  To recycle baby cribs: take it apart, use the slatted sides as trellis (morning glories, any trailing vine), the end pieces can be used for support pieces in the garden, or as signage (tape the garage sale or Happy Holidays banners to it), hang a wreath on it, draw pictures on it – all kinds of ways to re-use it. Offer it up to FreeCycle or FreebieCycle, where things are exchanged free-of-charge.  To keep it safe (not re-used as a crib), don’t give away the hardware; keep the nuts & bolts separate.  Some imagination will give that crib a new, safe life.  Cheers!

I started listening in 2000 when Glenn was the host. I went around telling everyone, “You’ve got to check out this show I’ve been listening to!” Some get it, some don’t, I LOVE it! Jeff is just as good as a host, and I hope Jeff stays right there for a very long time. Last Friday there was a mention of feral cats, and some organization that would spay and neuter if we could trap them. Would you PLEASE mention this again, as I missed it, and can’t find it through GOOGLE.  Thanks! David Howland  Fort Worth, TX 76134

If you stop in the evening for a few minutes at the Marfa Lights viewing area outside of Marfa along the highway to Alpine you will find yourself among numerous Marfa Lights tourists looking south over the desert to the hills and beyond. As the evening gets darker the hills effectively become invisible in the darkness.

Every know and then a whitish light will come snaking down through the “invisible” hills, disappearing and re-appearing, at which times numerous Lights tourists exclaim “Look! I see the Marfa Lights!” when all they’re seeing are the headlights of cars and trucks in the distance traveling north to Marfa on the highway from Presidio/Ojinaga, with their headlights seeming to disappear when seen from a distance as the vehicles encounter low spots in the roadway or curves behind hills, then magically re-appearing when emerging from behind these view obstructions. The visibility of these lights depends significantly on local atmospheric conditions (i. e. smog, fog, dust or other haziness).

I think the gullibility of so many such viewers requires more explanation than do such reported sightings of the “Marfa Lights”. As to whether there are other luminous phenomena in the same area that do not abide such straightforward explanation, I suppose many things are possible but in this case  they have escaped reputable, rational, intelligent and experienced documentation.
