Hammond wasn’t able to get much of a drive going and the ball was punted to Long Reach. The Lightning continued to move the ball against the Bears and eventually punched it in from two yards out to get the touchdown. After making the extra point, the game was tied at 20.

After a modest return by the Bears, Hammond started with decent field position. Once again, the Bears turned to their big play threat, as Paye powered his way to a 61 yard touchdown run, his third of the game, and second of more than 50 yards. The extra point was no good, and Hammond held a 26-20 lead going into the fourth quarter.

On Long Reach’s ensuing drive, linebacker Jared Turner had a huge sack and they forced Long Reach to punt. However, Hammond’s drive got no traction and they punted the ball right back.

Long Reach was working a strong drive, and was in position to tie the game or win it. With a critical 4th and two, Hammond committed a crucial error, as encroachment was called. On the very next play, Long Reach got a 34 yard touchdown pass to tie it at 26-26. However, linebacker Humphrey Anuh made - at the time - the play of the game, blocking the extra point, and keeping the game tied with 2:42 left in the game.

Hammond took the kickoff and had a modest drive but wasn’t able to score and was forced to punt it back to Long Reach with 57 seconds remaining in the game. A big completion got the ball down the five-yard line with 49 seconds remaining. However, on the next play the snap went clear over the head of quarterback Elijah Harris, knocking Long Reach out of field goal range. After a last ditch Hail Mary fell incomplete, overtime descended.

Hammond got the ball first in overtime and wasted no time. Tyler Martin hit Akili Moore on a slant in the end zone for a touchdown. Long Reach blocked the extra point, leaving the door open for them to win it, which is precisely what they did, as Cross scored on a two-yard run. Long Reach made the crucial extra point, and had won 33-32 for an upset on Homecoming.

Coach Makosy was none too pleased with his team after the game. The tone of his comments were that Hammond was a better team than Long Reach, but that a week of bad practices led to a very disappointing loss.

(part 2)

Long Reach Upsets Hammond in Overtime, 33-32

By Jordan Katz

Hammond played their first overtime game of the season, a heart-wrenching 33-32 loss. The game was won when Long Reach was able to make an extra point to win the game. As was the case with the Glenelg game, the deciding factor was the kicking game.

All-County running back Devon Paye continued his dominant season, rushing for 233 yards and three touchdowns. Wide receiver Akili Moore accounted for 90 yards receiving and a touchdown. Additionally, defensive back Chris Hall made a big contribution, with a long interception for a touchdown. These big plays were all the more important since Paye’s backfield partner, and fellow All-County running back, Dionte Jones was out with a rib injury.

The game began with Long Reach on offense. The Lightning were successfully moving the ball against the Golden Bears, which was greatly assisted by a big pass completion ball down to the Bears’ nine-yard line. Long Reach’s running back, Allen Cross, was able to run it in from nine yards out, for a touchdown. With the successful extra point, Long Reach had an early 7-0 lead.

Hammond’s first drive began at their 40, after Rasheed Lashley produced a nice return. Early in the Hammond drive, Quarterback Tyler Martin found Moore open on the left side and he sprinted down the sideline until he was tackled at the Long Reach five-yard line. On the next play, Paye ran off the left side for his first touchdown of the game. After Saul Whitaker made the extra point, Hammond drew even at seven all.

After kicking off to Long Reach, Hammond forced a three-and-out and quickly got the ball back. A 20-yard pass from Martin to Moore had Hammond in a position to score as the first quarter wound down, with score tied at seven.

The Bears were facing a 4th down, and Coach Makosy decided to go for it all through the air. Martin lobbed a pass in the end zone to Chris Hall, however, a Long Reach corner was able to get better positioning on it, and grabbed the interception. That lost opportunity was the first in a series of events that ultimately swung the game in Long Reach’s favor.

Starting from the 20, Long Reach successfully completed a pass to the left side, which was taken down to Hammond’s 27-yard line. Once again Long Reach was threatening to score. They were able to convert on 4th down and scored a second rushing TD to take the lead. After the extra point failed, the Lightning lead 13-7.

After the Lightning kicked off, Paye wasted no time in pulling Hammond back in the game, as he rattled off a 78-yard run down the left sideline on the first play of the drive. Saul Whittaker missed the extra point, and the score was once again tied at 13 all.

On the ensuing drive, Moore came up with a play on defense, tipping the pass to himself and running it in for six. But, it was called back due to a questionable pass interference call. Long Reach continued to move down the field and looked to be in position to score. With the ball at the ten, the Lightning attempted a pass. Chris Hall was able to jump the route, and returned it 90 yards for a momentum shifting pick-6. “I had two men, there was a running back coming out of the backfield, and the tight end came out. I was in the middle of my zone, and I just ran to get it and try to take it back.” Hall said of his defensive touchdown. The extra point was good, and Hammond led 20-13.

On Long Reach’s following drive, Hammond struck for another interception, as Gavin Hendrick forced the turnover with under a minute left in the first half. Coach Makosy decided to kneel on the ball, and the Golden Bears entered halftime leading 20-13.

Paye fumbled the opening kickoff of the second half, and Long Reach wound up having the first drive of both halves. Long Reach ultimately found themselves facing a 4th and long. Rather than punt, the Lightning tried for a fake. Hammond shut down the trickery, and got the ball back at their own 33.
