Giant Asteroid Flying Near Earth; Closest Flyby Since 1976

An asteroid about as tall at the Empire State Building is approaching Earth's atmosphere. Astronomers say a space rock of its size hasn’t come as close to Earth since 1976.

Classified as 2005 YU55, the asteroid's close proximity will allow scientists to study it, though they say there’s no risk of a collision with Earth.  2005 YU55 has a carbon-rich composition similar to the asteroids that collided with amino-acid filled meteorites during Earth's early development, paving the way for life forms on our planet.

The asteroid will come closest to Earth at about 6:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time today, Nov. 8, but will be hard to spot unless you have a telescope with an aperture of at least 6 inches.

Penn State Sexual Abuse Scandal; Former Football Coach Charged, Two High-Ranking Administrators Step Down

Penn State is being rocked by allegations of sexual abuse and a possible cover-up.

Former Nittany Lions defensive coordinator Gerald Sandusky has been charged with molesting young boys, some of whom he allegedly brought to the school's facilities from his work for The Second Mile, a foundation he established to help at-risk youngsters.

Two top university officials, athletic director Tim Curley and senior vice president Gary Schultz, have stepped down amid allegations that they lied to a grand jury and knowingly failed to report the alleged child-sex abuse to law enforcement.

The 67-year-old Sandusky was arrested Saturday and released on $100,000 bail after being arraigned on 40 criminal counts.

Attorneys for all three men say they are innocent.

Penn State's legendary head coach Joe Paterno, who recently became the coach with the most wins in Division I football history, hasn’t been implicated in any wrongdoing.

Daylight Saving Time Winds Down; Clocks Set Back an Hour This Weekend

It's the end of daylight saving time this weekend. But why do we "spring forward," or, as is the case on Sunday morning, "fall back"?

New Zealand entomologist George Vernon Hudson, whose work collecting insects would benefit from after-hours daylight, first proposed the time shift in 1895.

The practice didn't catch on until 1916, however, when Germany and its World War I allies used daylight saving time to conserve coal to help the war effort. England and Russia followed suit shortly thereafter, and the United States finally adopted daylight saving time in 1918.

Julian Assange Loses Appeal; WikiLeaks Founder Facing Extradition on Rape Charges

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has lost his appeal in the British High Court to avoid extradition to Sweden.

Assange is wanted for questioning over the alleged sexual assault of two women he encountered in Stockholm in 2010. Assange and his supporters argue that the rape claim is a conspiratorial move to discredit him because of the controversial work of WikiLeaks.

Wearing a navy blue suit, Remembrance Day poppy and a new hair style, Assange spoke to a crowd outside the court, urging people to go to Swedenversusassange.com to get the real story on his case.

Assange can appeal the court's decision to Britain’s Supreme Court, but only if the court deems his case a matter of "public importance."

Justin Bieber Paternity Suit; California Woman Claims Teen Pop Star Fathered Her Baby

Is it his baby (baby, baby)? Teen pop sensation Justin Bieber was slapped with a paternity lawsuit by a fan who says she took his virginity in a backstage bathroom at the Staples Center in Los Angeles last October and then gave birth to a baby boy three months ago.

The woman who filed the suit, Mariah Yeater, was 19 at the time while Bieber was only 16, raising the question of whether the alleged sexual encounter qualifies as statutory rape.

Yeater is demanding a paternity test, while Bieber's reps call her claim, "malicious, defamatory, and demonstrably false."

Apparently you're never too young to have your first sex scandal.
