After Campaigning On Support For A Balanced Budget, Stabenow Votes Against Even Debating Balanced Budget Amendment

As a candidate for U.S. Senate in 2000, Democrat Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) routinely presented herself as a proponent of fiscal responsibility, touting her support for a balanced budget and promising Michiganders she would support efforts to “pay our bills, pay down our debt” in Washington.

But today, Stabenow voted with her Washington party bosses against even considering a measure to balance the federal budget while cutting runaway spending now and capping Washington’s spending in the future – just the latest in a long pattern of Stabenow putting her liberal Washington agenda ahead of keeping her promises to Michiganders.

“Sadly, it’s not surprising that Senator Stabenow would vote against even considering a balanced federal budget today.  But Michiganders are no doubt wondering how Stabenow explains her vote today in light of her previous promises to ‘pay down our debt’ in Washington.” said National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) spokesman Jahan Wilcox today.

In Washington, Stabenow has routinely abandoned her previous support for fiscal responsibility, instead choosing to rubberstamp her party’s reckless spending agenda – including the failed $787 billion stimulus and $2 trillion health care overhaul.

In fact, it’s been 814 days since Stabenow and her fellow Senate Democrats have proposed any federal budget, much less the balanced budget Stabenow promised to support.  Meanwhile, in yet another indication that Stabenow’s deficit spending has failed to create the jobs she promised, Michigan’s unemployment rate rose in June to 10.5 percent in the wake of the failed $787 billion stimulus.
