2013 Release Notes
VERSION 5.3.002/28/2013
Project Details:
- Project costs are now broken out into Direct and Indirect Costs and displayed on the Details tab of Project Information pages. These figures are not available for SBIR and STTR projects.
- Items on the Publications tab are now hyperlinked to a recent project award page associated with that article. This makes it easier to navigate to the projects cited in published articles.
- Items on the Publications tab are annotated with ClinicalTrials.gov registration numbers, if applicable.
Data & Visualize:
- Circles visualization now uses Project Terms to generate circles, in addition to terms from the project title and description.
General Updates:
- Added a new section “My Bibliography” to allow Project Principal Investigators to enter a link to their NCBI bibliography.
- Other minor fixes and enhancements.
VERSION 5.2.001/10/2013
Query Form:
- The Study Section selection window now presents study sections alphabetically, in addition to the existing list organized by categories.
Other Updates:
- On the Project Description page, keywords used in text searches are now highlighted in the abstract, public health relevance statement, and project terms.

Query Form:
- Added ability to select multiple organizations as part of a single query (maximum 25 institutions). For instance, users might search for recent grants made to all members organizations of a regional biotechnology hub.

Query Form:
- Added Organization Lookup button, which allows users to find and select a single organization’s exact name before submitting a query.
- Enhanced Split Project Number search to allow wild card search exclusively on Activity Code (for instance, searching for ‘T’ in the will match all T32, T34, and other grants with activity codes beginning with T).
- Added a ‘submit query’ keyboard shortcut--users can now execute a RePORTER query with just a click of the <Enter> key.
- RePORTER Manual 4.2.0 (in PDF format) is now available.

Query Form:
- Added ability to search simultaneously for projects administered or funded by one or more ICs.
Export:
- Increased performance for exporting project search results, so export files can be produced more quickly.
- Increased project abstract export limit from 100 to 5000.
- Added ability to export the drill-down hit list from Charts Summary Table (Data & Visualize tab).
NCRR Data:
- Former NCRR projects transferred to NCATS and other ICs have now been linked to their new grant numbers and all of their associated publications and patents.

Browse NIH:
- A new Browse NIH tab is added on the RePORTER home page providing users alternate way to navigate RePORTER data. Users will be able to select the NIH IC along with other filters to view the drill down results.
Query Form:
- A split project number field is added to allow users to enter a partial project number.
Search Results:
- Users will be prompted with an option to run the query against all fiscal years, if their query of Active project and any other filter resulted in no results.

Data & Visualize Tab:
- A new "Circles" visualization has been added on the Data & Visualize tab that provides users with an interactive visualization of terms appearing in projects abstracts and titles of the search results.
- An option to view a summary by congressional district is added to the charts on Data & Visualize tab.

- Ability to use wildcard (“%”) when searching multiple project numbers.

Query Form:
- Ability to restrict publication text search to specific years has been added.
- NIH ARRA filter has been updated to allow users to search for NIH non-ARRA projects only.
Data & Visualize Tab:
- A new feature allows users to control the number of data points to be displayed on charts and in the data table on the Data and Visualization tab of the hit list.
- Charts and data can now be viewed by funding IC when users have clicked the Funding IC radio button on the RePORTER Query form.
History Tab:
- The total of project funding across previous years is now displayed in the History tab on each Project Information page.

General Updates:
- A color coded System Health indicator for current system performance conditions has been added to the RePORTER screen. Green indicates no issues. Yellow, there is a functionality or performance issue such as slowness due to volume, and Red means a compromise to capability.
Query:
- Up to 100 Principal Investigator / Project Leader names can be entered as query criteria.
Data and Visualize:
- Radio button selections have been added to allow users to graph either Projects or Project Funding data. The Data Table can now be sorted and the graph will automatically update to reflect the change.
News and More:
- The News tab has been enhanced and renamed to News & More. A new section captures and displays ARRA Investment Reports and ARRA Stories related to projects in the search results, or the individual project if accessed from the Project Information page.
ExPORT to Excel:
- The contact PI/Project Leader ID column is added as downloadable element for Export to Excel.

2011 Release Notes
VERSION 3.1.111/3/2011
General Updates:
- A New Map Tab – A new Map Tab is added to the Query search results. Each organization is marked with a ‘balloon’ icon. Click on this icon to view a list of all projects in the Search results for that organization. Click on a Project number to display the Project Details. Click on a Project Title to display the Project Description page. Please note that the number of marked locations on a map is currently limited to the first 500 organizations in the search results hit list.
Query:
- Text search functionality is now extended to make searches on publications. When using the checkbox to limit a RePORTER search to publications, a hit list is generated which contains projects acknowledged as sources of support for publications containing the search term in either the publication title, abstract, or keyword tags (e.g., MeSH headings).
Search Results:
- Data and Visualization Tab – The former Visualize Tab has been enhanced and renamed to Data & Visualization tab which now includes a Summary Table of Funding Data. A graphical representation of search results will be supported with this data table that breaks out the information by the number of (parent) projects, subprojects, and the funding associated with each. Export capability on the summary table is provided to move the data to an excel file.
Citation Manager:
- RePORTER now allows publication exports in EndNote® format so that publications related to your query can be imported into a citation manager.

General Updates:
- Text search is optimized further to include the filters for the reserved words and treatment of special characters in the keywords.
- A new 'News' tab has been added to Search Results and Project Information pages. This section captures and displays news items related to projects in the search results (or the individual project if accessed from the Project Information page). Currently available for research projects supported by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) only.
Query:
- The Study Section of the query form has been updated. Study sections search is further fine tuned to perform detailed search by using additional codes. Fellowships and SBIR related Study Sections are included.

General Updates:
- Throughout RePORT a change in terminology from Request for Applications/Program Announcement (RFA/PA) to Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) has been implemented.
- New Cooperative Agreement activity code UA5 has been incorporated into the Activity Code pick list.
ExPORTER:
- The ExPORTER database will now be updated weekly instead of monthly.
Search Results:
- A new Share Hit List capability provides for the quick dissemination of information. Send results of a RePORTER query to colleagues and other interested parties. This feature allows you to send an email containing the Hit List results right from a button on the Search Results page.
MyRePORTER:
- MyRePORTER can now create portfolios that allow users to collect important projects together in order to efficiently track high priority interests. Projects from any search result can be be saved to a new portfolio or added to an existing one. Saved portfolios can be viewed, emailed to others, or edited.
- Publication Alerts are now available. Like Project Alerts, you can receive an email anytime a new publication is added to PubMed that acknowledges support from projects matching your search criteria saved in MyREPORTER.
VERSION 2.8.208/18/2011
General Updates:
- A new “Similar Projects” tab has been added to the Project Information page (fiscal year 2007 and later projects only). This tab displays up to 100 projects similar to the selected project, based on overlap among the projects’ terms. The list of Similar Projects also can be modified to change the fiscal year, NIH spending category, agency/Institute/Center, and activity code of projects included in the list, or to exclude subprojects.
- A verification code is now required to view Principal Investigator and Program Officials’ email addresses on the Project Information Details page. This will help prevent the automatic harvesting of email addresses.
Query:
- Advanced search capability has been added to Term Search. Users can now use Boolean opeartors (and, or, not, and parentheses to control precedence) in their search criteria by selecting the ‘Advanced’ logic radio button.
- Users can limit their text search to abstracts, project titles and/or project terms.
- Separate search filters for SBIR/STTR Contracts and Non-SBIR/STTR Contracts have been added under ‘R and D Contracts’ in the Activity Code pick list and under ‘Contracts’ in the Funding Mechanism pick list.
Export to Excel:
- Users can now export a limited set of fields for up to 15,000 projects from the Search Results by selecting the ‘Basic’ export option. This is an increase from the current limit of 5,000.
- Project information export option has been added on the Project Information Subprojects and History tabs.
Search Results:
- The Links tab displaying additional information about NIH-funded research has been extended to Search Results. Currently these links include NIHMaps.Org which provides a database and interface for searching and discovering the types of research awarded by the NIH. User will be able to select the Fiscal Year (2007 and later only) and click on “View Topic Map” button to view a cluster-based visualization of the projects in search result. Currently the limit to number of projects allowed to view in cluster based visualization is 500.

MyRePORTER:
- Users will now need to enter a verification code while registering and using Forgot Password in NIH MyRePORTER.
VERSION 2.505/12/2011
MyRePORTER:
- MyRePORTER has been updated to provide users the ability to change their email address. Once logged in, the users can change the email address by clicking on the Change Email Address link. An email requesting confirmation of the change will be sent to the user, and upon confirmation the new email address will be activated.
- Users will be required to confirm account creation via email for new registration, and the accounts will not be activated until confirmed by the user.

General Updates:
- A new “Links” tab has been added to each Project Information page. This tab displays links to third-party websites that provide additional information about NIH-funded research and supported investigators. Currently, these links include:
NIHMaps.Org
The NIH Topic Maps website provides a database and interface for searching and discovering the types of research awarded by the NIH and relationships among grants awarded in fiscal years 2007-2010. To view a list of projects similar to the one you have selected from the RePORTER hit list, click “View Similar Projects” and to view a cluster-based visualization of the project you have selected click the “View Topic Map” button.
PI Profile Links
If the principal investigator(s) of a selected project has entered one or more links to a profile page, a list of PI profile links will appear in this section. A PI’s profile links may include links to an institutional or lab website, a researcher profile, bibliography, or any other URL providing information on the PI or project.

Query:
- A check box has been added to the bottom of the RePORTER Query Form that one may check if they would like the results of their query to only display the projects added to RePORTER since the last data refresh.
MyRePORTER:
- The ability for MyRePORTER users to receive weekly alerts of new projects added to the RePORTER database that match their saved queries in MyRePORTER has been added. To receive alerts, users must log in to their MyRePORTER account and check the boxes in the ‘Alerts’ column associated with the saved queries for which they would like to receive alerts. Users will receive a weekly email alerting them to new projects added to RePORTER that match their saved search queries. Lists of up to 25 projects per saved query will be included in the email along with links to the projects’ details and description in RePORTER. If the number of new projects exceeds 25, there will also be a link to a complete RePORTER hit list of all of the projects.

Query:
- A new checkbox has been added to allow users to “Exclude Subprojects” from search results.
Export to Excel:
- The order of columns in the exported files have been re-arranged in a more logical order.
- When “Funding by IC” is selected for export, all project costs in the export file will be broken down by funding IC. When Funding by IC is selected, there is no longer a column containing the total cost summed across multiple funding ICs. Some users experienced confusion and noted the potential for double counting when both total costs by IC and total costs summed across ICs were provided in the same spreadsheet.
VERSION 2.001/11/2011
General Updates:
- A way for Principal Investigators (PIs) to establish a link from his or her name to an existing “profile” website has been added. PI’s whose RePORTER records contain an email address (required to confirm their identity) now have the ability to add and manage hyperlinks from their names to “profile” websites of their choosing. A blue or orange icon now appears on every project’s Details page next to each PI’s name. A blue icon appears if a profile link already exists for the PI, and an orange icon will appear if a profile does not yet exist for the PI. Clicking on the orange icon allows the PI to create a link to a profile site (after a confirmatory email is sent). Clicking on a blue icon allows users to visit a PI’s profile site or allows the PI to manage his or her links.
- The Project Information tab for all NIH intramural projects now includes a link to the corresponding page of the NIH Intramural Database Annual Report for the particular project.
Search Results:
- A Clinical Studies tab has been added to the Search Results page that includes a listing of clinicaltrials.gov records that have been associated with one or more projects in a hit list. The core project number that the study is associated with, clinicaltrials.gov identifier, study name, and study status are all included in the hit list. The title of the study links to a description of the trial on the clinicaltrials.gov site. A Clinical Studies tab also will appear on a RePORTER project’s Information page if any clinicaltrials.gov records have been associated with the project. Users can export these lists to Excel.

VERSION 1.910/19/2010
General Updates:
- The ability to export charts generated with the “Visualize” functionality has been added to the “Visualize” tab.
Query:
- Query Form has been reorganized and new “help” pop-ups appear when clicking the “?” associated with each search field.
- New frequently-requested search fields added to Query Form: Country, City, and DUNS #.
- Ability to enter up to 100 unique project numbers at a time has been added to the Query Form.
Search Results:
- Country FIPS Code and complete Performance Site information (organization name, city, state, country, performance site FIPS, Duns #) added to the Project Details page.
- Implemented a default sort logic for projects in the Hit List, listing projects by PI name, Admin IC, FY (descending), and Project Number.

- A flag is now displayed on the Project Details page of projects funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA).
Export to Excel:
- A flag to distinguish projects that have been funded by ARRA has been added as a downloadable element for Export to Excel.

- Educational institution type and medical school department have have been added as searchable fields on the RePORTER query form.
Search Results:
- Award amounts for NIH projects awarded in FY2000 and later fiscal years are now available. This is a change from previously only showing dollar amounts for projects dating back to FY 2008.
- Program Official’s names and email address have been added to the Project Details page.
Export to Excel:
- Improved export to Excel functionality: Users now have the ability to either export all projects from their hit list, just the projects from the page they are currently viewing, or just the projects they have specifically selected by checking the check box beside the particular project.
- Program Official’s names and email addresses have been added as downloadable data element for Export to Excel.

- MyRePORTER feature has been added allowing users to create a MyRePORTER account to save and manage queries. When users are logged into their account, the Hit List page now has a ‘Save Query’ button so users can save their search criteria.

- Created nicely-formatted report printout for each project that includes all information found on the Description, Details, Results, History, and Subprojects tabs.
