Niban regulates p53 stability via Nucleophosmin
The Lu lab reports that UV irradiation induces Niban phosphorylation by AKT, which increases the association of Niban with nucleophosmin and frees nucleophosmin from the MDM2 complex, resulting in p53 degradation and inhibition of apoptosis.

A balancing act: aneuploidy in focus
Substantial efforts have been made to understand chromosomal aneuploidy, which causes mental retardation and spontaneous miscarriage, and is prevalent in most solid tumours and half of haematopoietic cancers.
This issue of EMBO reports highlights recent advances in this field through four Reviews. Rolf Jessberger analyzes the loss of accuracy of oocyte meiosis with age, and reviews by Holland & Cleveland, Pfau & Amon and Swanton & colleagues focus on aneuploidy in the context of cancer.
