AAHPERD Recognition Awards

All AAHPERD members have the privilege of submitting nominees for each award offered by the Alliance. These awards cover distinctive contributions to the profession and are presented annually at the AAHPERD National Convention & Exposition.

Award categories are listed below. Please refer to the “Nomination Procedures and Awards Criteria” document for detailed instructions regarding nomination submission and the specific criteria for each award. Questions regarding the nomination process should be directed to the Recognition Awards Staff Liaison, Patti Hartle.

The Luther Halsey Gulick Medal is awarded as the highest honor the American Alliance can bestow in recognition of long and distinguished service to one or more of the professions represented in the Alliance. Recipients are noteworthy leaders who exemplify the best in service, research, teaching and/or administration and whose contributions inspire youth to live vigorously, courageously, and freely as citizens in a free society.

The Honor Award recognizes meritorious contributions on the part of members of the Alliance in the two membership categories "college and university" and "non-college and university." Recipients are persons of personal integrity who exemplify the spirit of devoted service to the professions and who have, by their leadership and industry, made an outstanding and noteworthy contribution to the advancement of health, physical education, recreation, or dance.

The Charles D. Henry Award provides the means through which the Alliance recognizes essential contributions of its members who, through distinguished service to the Alliance: increase involvement of ethnic minorities in AAHPERD; increase communication with greater numbers of ethnic minority members; and extend meaningful services to AAHPERD ethnic minorities.

The Mabel Lee Award provides the means through which the Alliance recognizes its younger members who have demonstrated outstanding potential in scholarship, teaching, and/or professional leadership.

The R. Tait McKenzie Award provides the means through which the Alliance recognizes significant contributions of its members made outside the framework of the Alliance, but which reflect prestige, honor, and dignity on the Alliance.

The William G. Anderson Award recognizes persons who are not members of the Alliance but who, through their work in allied or auxiliary fields, have contributed significantly to the general purposes of the Alliance and its associations.

The E. B. Henderson Award recognizes minority AAHPERD members who, through numerous years of proven dedication to scholarship, mentorship, and service to ethnic minorities, have increased involvement of ethnic minorities and/or underserved populations within their profession, AAHPERD, or society.

The Social Justice and Diversity Young Professional Award is given to a minority member of AAHPERD who is 40 years old or younger and who has demonstrated superior promise in the areas of service, teaching, scholarship and commitment to the goals of the Alliance focusing specifically on under-represented and/or underserved populations and promotion of social justice and diversity.
