It is pleasure to be here today.

Thank you, Governor McDonnell for convening such a great group of leaders to discuss how Virginians can use innovation to drive education reform.

Today, I want to discuss the often neglected link between standards and innovation. Even the very words "standards" and "innovation" seem at odds with each other.

Education Secretary Arne Duncan Announces $27 Million for Three Ready-to-Learn Television Program Grants

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan today announced three awards totaling $27 million for projects to improve educational opportunities for young learners through innovative technology. Grants will be used to develop and deliver high-quality, age-appropriate, educational content to increase the early literacy and mathematics skills of young children age two through eight years old.

Eight States to Receive Funds to Support Education Jobs

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan today announced that eight states will receive millions of dollars to support education jobs.

"There is a huge sense of urgency to get these funds out the door," said Duncan. "These education dollars will help these states keep thousands of teachers in the classroom working with our students this school year."

Virginia to Receive More Than $324 Million in Additional Recovery Funds

U. S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan today announced that an additional $324,675,748 is now available for Virginia under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009. To date, Virginia has received $2,120,092,724 through the Recovery Act. The state recently reported that recovery dollars have been used to provide funding for nearly 8,000 education jobs from Jan. 1 to March.
