Spotlight on Michigan - See Our Program Impact

THIS PROGRAM IS COMPLETELY CLOSED, INCLUDING THE FINAL WAITLISTS THAT CLOSED DECEMBER 7, 2010.

The State of Michigan implemented a mail-in rebate program to help residents replace older, inefficient appliances with ENERGY STAR® qualified and ultra-efficient appliances. Rebates for clothes washers, dishwashers, oil and propane furnaces, refrigerators, propane storage and tankless water heaters, and solar water heaters began February 10, 2010. Rebates for natural gas furnaces, natural gas, propane and oil furnaces with ECM motors, and natural gas storage and tankless water heaters began on August 1, 2010.

On August 31, 2010 Michigan stopped accepting new rebate reservations for furnaces and water heaters. Reservations made prior to August 31, 2010 for furnaces and waters heaters were honored until September 14, 2010. On November 8, 2010 rebate funds for refrigerators, clothes washers, and dishwashers were reserved; the final waitlists closed on December 7, 2010. The rebate forms required consumers to certify residency and that the rebated product is a replacement.

Michigan Refines Appliance Rebates to Help More Homeowners

Rebates ranging from $25 to $2500 - Dishwashers, Solar Water Heaters

Michigan's appliance rebate program launched on February 10, 2010, offering rebates on ENERGY STAR® qualified and ultra-efficient clothes washers, refrigerators, dishwashers, oil and propane furnaces, and solar and propane water heaters. After five months, nearly half of the white-good appliance rebates but only about 1% of heating equipment rebates had been reserved.

Michigan officials believed increasing the rebate levels on heating products would increase their reservation rate and offer a better rebate package to consumers. A new rebate phase will launch on August 1, adding different types of furnaces and gas water heaters to the list of eligible products.

Co-marketing campaigns with local utilities, including radio and TV ads, will also be rolled out in the next few weeks. Due to these efforts, funds are expected to be exhausted by October, says Stephanie Epps, appliance analyst for the Michigan Department of Energy, Labor & Economic Growth.

Andrew Levin, acting director of the Michigan Department of Energy, is excited about the program refinements. "The rebates will encourage even more Michigan homeowners to purchase highly efficient furnaces and water heaters. The rebates will also spur economic growth and help Michigan reduce its reliance on fossil fuels."

Rebates range from $25 for certain dishwashers to $2,500 for solar water heaters. The rebate program will continue until funds are depleted.
