Program Impact:
Hawaii Delivers 4,300 Appliance Rebates in Three Days

People looking at refrigerators

Hawaiians look for savings in ENERGY STAR qualified refrigerators.

Hawaii's Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program delivered $250 in refrigerator rebates to more than 4,300 residents in just three days, quickly putting money in the pockets of residents and retailers. According to Hawaii Energy, almost 4,000 ENERGY STAR® qualified refrigerators were sold on the first day of the program, which ran from May 24 to May 26, 2010.

Officials on the island of Kauai attribute much of the program's success to support from its retailers. "We are an island community with two national appliance dealers and one local appliance dealer," explained Ray Mierta, energy services supervisor of Kauai Island Utility Cooperative. "There is a real sense of community on Kauai. Even those that did not stand to benefit financially wanted to help make this program a success because they saw the benefits to their family and neighbors."

Refrigerator sales increased substantially compared with sales during the same period last year, according to Mierta. He said retailers were pleased with the program's stimulus, and residents were happy with the $250 in savings.

State officials used direct-mail marketing to better connect with residents. "This target marketing gave us the benefit of reaching each [resident] individually and gave them an equal opportunity to learn about the program rather than leave it to chance," said Mierta.
