Spotlight on California - See Our Program Impact

California is implementing a mail-in rebate program to help residents replace older, inefficient appliances with new ENERGY STAR® qualified and ultra-efficient appliances. Rebates for refrigerators, clothes washers, and room air conditioners began on April 22, 2010. Rebates for dishwashers, freezers, electric heat pump water heaters, gas storage water heaters, solar water heaters, central air conditioners, air-source heat pumps, gas furnaces, and gas boilers began on July 29, 2010. No rebate applications for these products post-marked after December 6, 2010 were accepted. As of December 31, 2010, all rebates for central air conditioners, gas furnaces, gas boilers, heat pumps, and water heaters have been reserved; however, consumers can join a waitlist in the event that additional funding becomes available.

Program Impact:
California Retailers and Utilities Partner on Consumers Rebates

More than 100 partners have helped make California’s program successful.

More than 100 partners—including retailers, public relations agencies, and utilities—have helped make California's program successful.

California retailers are experiencing record sales from the State Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program, the state reports. It has received more than 112,000 rebate applications since the program launched on April 22, 2010, Earth Day.

California's program offers rebates on ENERGY STAR® qualified refrigerators, clothes washers, dishwashers, freezers, water heaters, air conditioners, heat pumps, furnaces, and boilers. Rebates range from $50 for room air conditioners to $1,000 for central air conditioners and heat pumps.

The program's success can be attributed largely to the many retailers and utilities working to spread the message. More than 100 partners, including retailers, public relations agencies, and utilities, are helping market the program across California.

"One of the big successes of our program is the number of retailers that have wanted to partner with the government," says Amy Morgan, information officer for the California Energy Commission. "Retailers have been very appreciative of the program and are happy that stimulus funding is having a direct impact on their business."

With a complex economy, a dispersed population in urban and rural areas, and a varied climate, support from a large network of stakeholders is imperative in California, according to Morgan. "The state is grateful that many organizations have come together to increase the sale of efficient appliances."

Consumers must provide proof of recycling to receive their rebate. Certified recyclers will accept all appliances, but consumers can also check with their utility on buy-back or pick-up programs. City or county governments may also offer curbside pick-up on e-cycle or junk pick-up days.
