From Space Station, Astronauts to Speak with D.C. Students

As part of International Education Week activities, astronauts from the orbiting International Space Station will converse Tuesday with students from two Washington, D.C., middle schools about living and working in space.

Students from D.C.’s Hart and Deal middle schools will gather at the U.S. Department of Education’s auditorium to talk with space station “residents” Scott Kelly, Shannon Walker and Doug Wheelock. Also on hand speaking with the astronauts will be U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and NASA Associate Administrator for Education Leland Melvin.

The event will be carried live on NASA Television, as well as at http://www.nasa.gov/ntv.

The downlink is part of International Education Week which runs Nov. 15-19, but is scheduled for the Tuesday following the official week. Tuesday’s event continues a long-standing partnership between U.S. Department of Education and NASA to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange. It is also an opportunity to promote the value of teaching and learning in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, often referred to as STEM.
