U.S. Rep. George Miller and Musician Eleanor Friedberger to Join Education Secretary Arne Duncan for Let’s Read! Let’s Move! Summer Enrichment Series Event on Tuesday

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, will be joined by U.S. Rep. George Miller (D-Calif.) and musician Eleanor Friedberger of Fiery Furnaces on Tuesday, July 12 at noon for this summer's second Let's Read! Let's Move! summer enrichment event on the outdoor plaza of the Department's Lyndon Baines Johnson headquarters building in Washington, D.C. The Department's Let's Read! Let's Move! series will increase awareness of the critical importance of summer learning and encourage all adults to read to children.

Students and officials from Montgomery County Schools, District of Columbia Public Schools, Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling Youth Center and the United Planning Organization will participate in the event. The Secretary, Miller and Friedberger will read children's books to students and will join them in playing games and participating in fitness activities, as part of First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move! initiative to emphasize the importance of an active and healthy lifestyle. Friedberger will also perform a song for the children before the event at 11:50 a.m. The YMCA of Metropolitan Washington PHD (Physical, Healthy, Driven) program will contribute staff and resources to conduct games, Target Corporation will provide books and healthy snacks and Nickelodeon will provide cookbooks and pedometers to support this summer’s series of events.

As part of the Let's Read! Let's Move! series, the Department will invite Cabinet members, administration officials and other public figures to join in reading children's books, promoting healthy lifestyles and participating in games and fitness activities with children in pre-kindergarten through third grade, from various local schools and summer programs. Additional Let's Read! Let's Move! events are scheduled for July 20, and 26.
