Encourage Physical Activity At Home With An Outdoor Play Area

Back in the “good old days”, children would wake up, throw on some play clothes, gobble down their cereal and head outside. They only returned when it was lunch or supper time…and that was only when called! Unfortunately, nowadays most kids are glued to their favorite gaming systems and ‘tween TV.

Eloise Elliott, Ph.D, and Steve Sanders, Ph.D, in a PBS.org article on children’s activity, wrote that the National Association for Sport and Physical Education advises that kids need to be physically active for at least 60 minutes per day. Sixty minutes should be pretty easy, but in a world where more and more kids are getting less exercise and becoming more sedentary, parents often struggle to find ways to keep kids physically active at home.

One solution for this dilemma is to create a fun, engaging outdoor play area at home with a variety of activities to keep kids interested and active for long periods of time.  Below are a few ideas as to what to include if you want to create a fun outdoor play area for your kids:

Summer is a fun time for most, but can be a source of dread for others. It’s usually the time when people will go outside and enjoy the wonderful weather and blue skies. But for some of us it’s that time of year to stay inside and count down the days until winter again.

Most people who prefer to stay indoors in the summertime do so due to harsh allergies during this season. But, unfortunately, just because you’re safe inside doesn’t mean you’ve completely avoided all of those pesky allergens!

Atlanta-Based Companies Bring Help To Joplin

Sarah Molinari, Home Depot Communications

Some of the top companies in Georgia came together to aid tornado victims in Joplin today. We flew in 200 volunteers courtesy of Delta Air Lines. The cargo area was loaded with clean-up supplies from Georgia Pacific, and food and drink from Coca-Cola and Chick-fil-A. I was able to travel with the group early this morning on a special charter from Delta Air Lines.

We boarded the Boeing 757 in order to get a lot of volunteers and supplies here on the ground in Joplin today for projects throughout the city. One group is helping to rebuild a store associate’s home that was severely damaged by the May 22 storm. Another group is at the Sunny Jim Little League Park, which at least three of the Joplin residents I’ve met today have referred to as the “heart and soul” of this community.

Helping Joplin Recover & Rebuild

Kelly Caffarelli, President of The Home Depot Foundation

Monday morning I’ll be on my way to Joplin, Missouri with about 200 of my fellow Home Depot associates from Atlanta. We all volunteered to go help clean up and make repairs in the aftermath of the devastating tornado that hit Joplin on May 22. There’s a waiting list of people who wanted to participate; in fact Home Depot associates from as far away as Seattle have been asking for the opportunity to volunteer in Joplin since the day after the tornado.

Many of our volunteers Monday work at our Store Support Center in Atlanta and have been instrumental in helping the community and associates recover. That includes preparing for the opening of a new temporary store to serve customers after our store was destroyed by the tornado. They all wanted to come in person and show their support with their own sweat equity.

My dad loves to stay busy around the house. That’s why some of my fondest memories with him are long conversations while I passed him this tool or that, or simply sat and watched him in action. I remember thinking that he could fix anything. He was my superhero back then and he still is! So in honor of Father’s Day, here are some special memories of dad from the Home Depot team:
