Funding Priorities: Education


The Hearst Foundations work to promote access to quality education. The Foundations primarily provide endowment, program, and capital support at institutions of higher education.

Please provide the following information in addition to the information requested in the General Proposal Requirements:

  1. Include within the Narrative

      1. Recent accomplishments, current activities, future goals
      2. Governance and accreditation
    2. Hearst Fund (if applicable)
      1. Purpose and anticipated impact of a Hearst Scholarship Fund
      2. Proposed investment and payout policies
      3. Fund utilization - estimate of the anticipated scholarship dollars available through the Fund, including the projected number and dollar amounts of scholarships to be awarded
      4. Proposed selection process for scholarship recipients (must reside in the United States)

      1. Endowment
        • Total endowment
        • Investment and payout policies
        • Total endowment designated for financial aid
        • Endowment per student - total endowment divided by total number of students
      2. Financial Aid
        • Amount of aid provided by institution, and percent of total budget

        • Average aid package per student

    2. Students
      1. Demographics
        • Total enrollment
        • Number of undergraduate and graduate students
        • Number of full-time and part-time students
        • Number of male and female students
        • Total minority student enrollment, defined as African American, Asian American, Hispanic American, and Native American, with enrollment breakdown of those groups
        • Percentage of students from low-income families (with definition of institutional criteria for low-income)
        • Percentage of first-generation students
        • Percentage of non-traditional students (defined as age 25 and older)
      2. Retention and Graduation
        • Overall freshman-to-sophomore year retention rate
        • Overall four, five and six year graduation rates
        • Retention and graduation rates for minorities, as defined above
        • Average number of years to graduate
        • Description of any programs or services designed to improve and maintain retention and graduation rates
    3. Faculty
      1. Demographics
        • Total number
        • Number of full-time and part-time faculty
        • Number of male and female faculty
        • Number of minority faculty, as defined above
        • Number of faculty with terminal degrees
        • Student:Faculty ratio
