Gulf Coast Recovery Act Project Halted by Oil Spill Resumes at Florida’s Topsail Hill Preserve State Park

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service today marked the resumption of an important habitat restoration project at Topsail Hill Preserve State Park near Destin, FL funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA). The project, which was temporarily delayed by the response to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, is a joint effort with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), Division of Recreation and Parks, and Three Rivers Resource Conservation and Development Council.

Groundbreaking for restoration project at Long Beach West

Stratford, Conn. - A ceremony was held today to break ground for a project to restore Long Beach West, one of Connecticut’s longest stretches of barrier beach. The project, supported by nearly $1 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act stimulus funding, involves demolishing the dilapidated remnants of a former summer community, removing debris and contaminants, and ultimately re-establishing 35-acres of beach to its natural state for people and wildlife.

Recovery Act Funds Wetlands Restoration and Road Improvements at Santee National Wildlife Refuge

Summerton, S.C. – Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced today the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service awarded contracts for major wetlands restoration and road repairs at Santee National Wildlife Refuge totaling more than $1.8 million under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA). One contract, for $1,105,742, is awarded to Shaw Environmental and Infrastructure Inc. of Alpharetta, Ga., for repairs to public roads in the refuge. The second contract, for $724,377, is awarded to Ducks Unlimited for improvements to the refuge’s impoundment system that will help it to better manage waterfowl.

Recovery Act Funds Three New Visitor Contact Stations at Central Arkansas National Wildlife Refuges

Augusta, Ark. – Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced today the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has awarded a $2.8 million contract for three new visitor contact stations and a new maintenance building at central Arkansas national wildlife refuges under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA). K-Con Inc., a small business in Charleston, S.C., will design and build the four new buildings under a contract for $2,815,365.

Secretary Salazar Announces over $3.5 million of Recovery Act Funding for New Visitor’s Center at North Texas National Wildlife Refuge

Sherman, TX - Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced today that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) has awarded $3,538,235 for a new visitor’s center located at the Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge (NWR). Of the over $3.5 million, $2,835,300 was allocated to Imperial Construction, Inc. of Weatherford, Texas to build a portion of the center at the refuge under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act).

New Jobs Created in $4.5 Million Recovery Act Project for San Diego National Wildlife Refuge Complex

Sacramento, CA – The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) has awarded a $4.5 million contract for the construction of a new administrative headquarters, visitor contact station, and service building for the San Diego National Wildlife Refuge Complex (NWRC) in Chula Vista, California. PCL Construction Services, Inc., of San Diego received the award ($4,565,746) to construct the new facility, which is funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Construction is expected to begin later this month.

The Toppenish National Wildlife Refuge will benefit from a contract to replace an old, unused building with a 1,530-square foot facility designed for the temporary housing of refuge staff. The Department of the Interior’s U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced it will provide more than $400,000 in stimulus funding under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for the project. The existing structure has sat unused for more than 10 years and poses a danger to Toppenish staff and visitors.

Washington company awarded $46,100 in stimulus funding to upgrade entrance road at Conboy Lake National Wildlife Refuge

The Conboy Lake National Wildlife Refuge will benefit from a contract to improve a three-quarter mile stretch of the refuge entrance road. The Department of the Interior’s U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced it will provide more than $46,000 in stimulus funding under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for the project. The funds will be used to improve drainage, apply grading material, install four safety turnouts, and install new signs.

Waubay, S.D. - Work is underway to reinforce a 200-foot stretch of shoreline at Waubay National Wildlife Refuge. The $90,000 project paid for through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will shore up the shoreline on a lake at the bottom of a hill beneath the facility’s offices and visitor center building. This project is vital to the future of the refuge,” refuge manager Larry Martin said. “Without taking the steps to stop the shoreline erosion with a wall, the building would eventually collapse into the lake. Thanks to the stimulus funds, we can address this problem now.”

Two Colorado based companies won competitive bids to complete the projects. Walden-based Rocky Mountain Fence will replace a boundary fence with a more wildlife-friendly one, replacing ones that inhibited wildlife movement. Everglades’ Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge Receives Stimulus Funding to Remove Invasive Species, Restore Natural Habitats

Boynton Beach, Florida - Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced today the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has awarded a $1.25 million contract for removal of invasive plants at the Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The ARRA contract, awarded to Aquatic Vegetation Control, Inc., of West Palm Beach, Fla., will be used to remove invasive plant species from about 9,000 acres of the refuge, including Melaleuca, Old World climbing fern, Brazilian pepper and Australian pine.

Stimulus funds provide company shelter in economic storm: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service awards $30,000 in projects to Kansas company

Wichita, Kan. - The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service awarded Protection Shelters LLC nearly $30,000 to construct tornado shelters at refuges in Kansas. The Service funded these projects at the national wildlife refuges through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The stimulus money will pay for shelters at Quivira, Flint Hills and Marais des Cygnes National Wildlife Refuges. The shelters will protect staff and visitors during weather emergencies. The projects will benefit not only the refuges, but will help keep the company in business.

Washington Company Awarded $224,000 in Stimulus Funding for Pilings, Sign Replacement at Willapa National Wildlife Refuge

ILWACO, WA. - The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, an agency of the Department of the Interior, has awarded a $212,400 contract under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to Quigg Bros., Inc., a marine specialist construction company based in Aberdeen, Washington. An additional $12,000 was used to replace damaged or missing signs on the land boundary at the refuge. The company will replace 25 pylons and their associated boundary signs at the Willapa National Wildlife Refuge to clearly designate the 16,950-acre Presidential Proclamation Area boundary.

CHENEY, WA. - The Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge will benefit from a pair of contracts to restore a boundary fence and improve energy efficiency at the eastern Washington facility. The Department of the Interior’s U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced it will provide more than $600,000 in stimulus funding under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to restore a three-mile stretch of boundary fence and engineer geothermal and solar energy at the refuge. The funding will also be used to increase energy efficiency at the refuge by replacing outdated windows and cooling units.

Construction Service Company Awarded $306,000 in Stimulus Funding for Housing and Solar Energy Upgrades on Remote Laysan Island

HONOLULU, HI. - The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has awarded two contracts totaling $306,424 under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to Northern Management Services, a maintenance and general contracting company based in Sandpoint, Idaho. The projects will employ eight workers. The company will install a modern solar panel array at the Laysan Island research facility located within Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument and replace the deteriorating living quarters tents.

Stimulus Funding for Habitat and Public Access Improvements at Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge

Renovation of the Suwannee River Sill and new road construction at the refuge will provide the public with safer, year-round access to the Suwannee River, improve passage for small boats, canoes and kayaks, and restore the natural flow of the Suwannee River. The Service has provided the Federal Highway Administration with $1 million in stimulus funds to upgrade an existing gravel road to an asphalt surface and build a new boat ramp, access lane, and parking lot for the public. USFWS will separately award additional stimulus contracts to private companies for related improvements at the refuge.

WASHINGTON, DC - The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) today announced that it is replacing some projects originally identified for funding under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) with other projects in order to accelerate job creation and meet critical needs for the Service. Specifically, the Service is replacing 111 projects totaling $15.1 million, representing approximately 5 percent of the agency’s $280 million share of the ARRA program. These projects are being replaced for various reasons, such as prior completion with non-ARRA funds or site condition or permit issues resulting in unacceptable delays.

Local company awarded $619,000 in stimulus funding to demolish and remove cottages, contaminants from Long Beach West in Stratford, Conn.

Stratford, Conn. - The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has awarded a $619,000 contract under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to the Milford, Conn., office of LVI Environmental Services, Inc., a national remediation and facilities services firm to remove 41 vacant cottages on Long Beach West, municipal property in Stratford, Conn. LVI Environmental Service, Inc. will demolish and remove the cottages, remnants of a former summer beach community, as well as other debris and contaminants such as asbestos. The company will build a temporary road to transport materials off the site and remove some of the loose debris.

Easthampton receives $750,000 in federal stimulus funds to complete fish passage project at Manhan River Dam

Easthampton, Mass. - The City of Easthampton has received $750,000 under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) to provide fish passage at the Manhan River Dam. A new fish ladder at the site will allow blueback herring, American shad, sea lamprey and Atlantic salmon to reach and inhabit historical upstream spawning and nursery areas in the main stem and north branches of the Manhan River and its tributaries. The project will provide migratory fish access to approximately 11 river miles on both branches of the river.
