07/13/11 - Governor Quinn Signs Legislation to Advance Innovative Education Practices
Law Supports Creation of Innovative Partnership School in Aurora to Advance Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Education
AURORA – July 13, 2011. Governor Pat Quinn today signed legislation that will advance STEM learning in Illinois by allowing the creation of an innovative school that will offer specialized education opportunities. Senate Bill 621 supports the creation of a math and science partnership school operated by Aurora’s four school districts and Aurora University on campus. Joined by local middle school students attending summer science camp, Governor Quinn called for increased STEM learning opportunities in Illinois as a way to prepare students for 21st century jobs.

Three Education Bills Will Equip Youth with Anti-Violence Training and Help Students Struggling in Math and Reading
CHICAGO – July 8, 2011. Governor Pat Quinn today signed legislation that will help students across Illinois to learn about how to prevent violence and resolve conflicts peacefully. The Governor also signed bills into law that will help elementary school students who are struggling with math and reading by ensuring that they spend more classroom time on these vital subjects.

06/30/11 - IDHS’ GEAR UP/Steps AHEAD program to triple scholarship funding for low-income youth in 2011
Program also raises awareness of college options, costs and requirements
SPRINGFIELD, Illinois – The Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS) anticipates awarding post-secondary scholarships totaling approximately $1.25 million to more than 200 low-income high school graduates this summer through the GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs)/Illinois Steps AHEAD (Attaining Higher Education through Academic Development) program. Last year, the program awarded approximately $386,000 to 61 students.
