UpNorth Community

How can you build a community without providing shelter, heat or food?

By sharing our stories, our art, music and opinions. By talking about where we live and where we have been and what we love and hate. The UpNorth Community is an attempt to make the radio a two-way proposition:

Community Calendar: The only online events calendar to cover all the communities of the Adirondack North Country and the St. Lawrence and Champlain Valleys.

UpNorth Gallery: selections from exhibitions at regional galleries and web-only exhibits of work submitted by area artists.

UpNorth Music A studio outreach program to connect North Country musicians with North Country audiences, with support from the New York State Music Fund.

UpNorth Concert Hall Musical and spoken word performance by regional artists and guests in mp3 audio format.

Blogs and Letters Home Get individual takes on the North Country in a collection of blogs by North Country writers, and blogs of interest to public broadcasting listeners. North Country travelers give you a look at the far corners of the world in our Letters Home series.

Public Records Library of primary-source documents behind the news and life of the region collected from government, organizational and private sources.

UpNorth Forums In the belief that public broadcasters should occupy a place at the center of civic discourse, NCPR Online provides a home for a wide-ranging examination of issues and interests of concern to North Country communities. We have partnered with educational institutions and other public-speaking venues in the region to collect and archive lectures, addresses and discussions of public importance, and spoken-word performances of lasting value.

Meet the Masters of North Country Folklife A rich multimedia compendium that profiles people who have mastered and conserved a variety of family and community traditions over several generations in the North Country and who actively practice them today. Together, they exemplify a living history of our North Country and a way of life otherwise often difficult to explain. An ongoing project of Traditional Arts in Upstate New York (TAUNY).

Community Links An index of websites of interest to regional residents and public radio listeners: media, government, tourism, history and arts organizations, learning resources, etc., and--last but not least--our rare and bizarre B.I.T.I.L. library (Breathtakingly Inane and Totally Incomprehensible Links).

North Country Identity Who makes the we? Residents and visitors discuss what they understand to be the unique identity of our region. Sample the diverse voices of ordinary people talking about their lives, homes and work. Experience the settlement of the region via a radio theater production of the signature novel Eben Holden: A Tale of the North Country.
