Watershed Scientist
The Nature Conservancy

The Nature Conservancy seeks an experienced Watershed Scientist to help lead and support the implementation of the Conservancy’s watershed-based strategies in the Chesapeake Bay basin, including improving and restoring water quality, providing ecologically sustainable freshwater flows, and restoring connectivity among bay and tributary habitats. The Watershed Scientist will work collaboratively with Conservancy staff and partners to provide technical guidance and leadership in several areas, including completing environmental flow assessments, monitoring pollution reduction from staff and partner implementation of best management practices (BMPs), designing and evaluating stream and aquatic habitat restoration and connectivity projects, and targeting other freshwater conservation and restoration strategies in priority watersheds. Expertise in hydrology and aquatic ecology is essential, as is familiarity with monitoring protocols, hydrologic modeling approaches, and statistical analysis. Ability to apply scientific findings to defining management needs and policy objectives is critical.

Environmental Management Career Development Program

Environmental Management Fellowship in support of The Chesapeake Bay Program’s Enhancing Partnering, Leadership, and Management Goal Implementation Team

Restoration of the Chesapeake Bay requires committed, passionate individuals and the CRC seeks such an individual for a three-year appointment to the Enhancing Partnering, Leadership, and Management Goal Team. The Enhancing Partnering, Leadership, and Management Goal Team seeks to continually improve the leadership and management of the Chesapeake Bay Program Partnership and assist Bay stakeholders in building their capacity to become environmental leaders in their communities.

The ideal candidate for the position would have the following background and qualifications.

  • A bachelors degree in environmental management, public policy, business or related topics is preferred but science degrees are also acceptable for those applicants that have an interest in management and policy.
  • Ability to work with people in a consensus building environment and independently plan meetings, develop agendas, and draft concise meeting minutes.
  • Ability to perform background research, analysis, and synthesis on policy and science related topics.
  • Ability to manage and update content for Goal Implementation Team web page.
  • Ability to work independently and under tight timelines
  • Ability to work with a range of partners as part of interdisciplinary teams and collaborative processes
  • Interest in learning how a multi-party, governmental-environmental-management partnership makes decisions effectively and sets and achieves goals through collaborative processes.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is required.  Experience with Microsoft Access is a plus. 

The annual salary is $35,096 and a competitive vacation and benefits package is included for the three-year appointment. In addition to the experience gained through these assignments, Staffers, through individual professional development plans, also attend professional conferences, workshops, and training related to their position and identified future career interests.
