LaBrae Elementary JMGers

The Junior Master Gardener Program at LaBrae Elementary School in Leavittsburg, Ohio is part of Mrs. Bollinger’s fourth grade science class.  Over 120 students take part in JMG sessions running from October to March and follow the JMG chapters and topics that include Plant Growth & Development,  Soils & Water,  Herbs & Seeds,  and Ecology & Environment Horticulture and others.

 Mrs. Bollinger says, “I truly appreciate this program because it is an opportunity to have an outside source present information that makes connections within other subjects and information already introduced. It is so successful because it covers the Ohio standards for life science.”


Recently the group completed a service project planting crabapple trees at the school’s playground. “Each of the 125 students took a turn with the trowel, hand hoe or rake to dig the hole,” says group leader Pat Fuller. “We reviewed lessons from the Soil and Water class to determine the soil type...” (read more)
