Regional and International Programs
Our College has a long history of collaborative regional work and work in overseas locations. Here are some of our current projects.
ADAP addresses common Pacific Island-based agriculture and community issues through cooperative research, extension, and instruction programs that are culturally appropriate, socially acceptable, economically viable, and environmentally compatible. The project works with American Samoa Community College, College of Micronesia, Northern Marianas College, and the University of Guam. This project started in 1993.
The Center for Tropical and Subtropical Aquaculture (CTSA) is one of five regional aquaculture centers in the United States established by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The regional aquaculture centers integrate individual and institutional expertise and resources in support of commercial aquaculture development. CTSA was established in 1986 and is jointly administered by The Oceanic Institute and the University of Hawaii. The CTSA administrative office and staff are located at The Oceanic Institute's Makapu`u Point site on windward Oahu. A Board of Directors is responsible for overseeing the programmatic functions of CTSA.
Improve agroecosystem performance through rectification of soil nitrogen, soil phosphorus, soil acidity, soil water and soil degradation constraints using an integrated nutrient management approach. This USAID project began in 1997.
This project focuses on the application of systems analysis and simulation to problems faced by resource-poor farmers in the tropics and subtropics, specifically in the area of evaluating new and untried agricultural technologies. This USAID funded project began in 1983.
To develop high quality, agricultural research which is relevant to industry needs, has a demonstrated impact, protects the environment, and enhances economic opportunities, for the tropical and subtropical regions of the United States. The CTAHR and the University of Guam work as administrative hubs for all Pacific region projects. Our Caribbean Basin counterpart is administrated out of the University of Florida and includes the Land Grant institutions of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. This project started in 1970 as a USDA Section 406 special grant.
