Becoming Writers in the Elementary Classroom: Visions and DecisionsKatie Van Sluys, author of  Becoming Writers in the Elementary Classroom: Visions and Decisions, notes, “What teachers believe about writing and writers influences how they teach writing and how their students feel about writing.” The book invites teachers to revisit and re-invision their beliefs about writing and includes case studies, student artifacts, authentic writing experiences, and assessments. Van Sluys talks about the case studies in this video.

The Results of the 2011 NCTE Elections Are In!
Ernest MorrellSecondary Section member Ernest Morrell has been elected Vice President of NCTE. Morrell is the incoming director of the Institute for Urban Minority Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. He has been a member of the CEE Executive Committee (2003-07), has served on several NCTE committees, and has authored numerous books.

New Elementary and Middle Level Representatives-at-Large, a new trustee of the Research Foundation, and new members of nominating and executive committees of NCTE, CEE, TYCA, and NCTE’s Sections have also been elected. See all of the election results on NCTE's website.

$10,000 Prize Available for Best Fiction
The Norman Mailer Center and the National Council of Teachers of English are pleased to announce their first writing award for teachers, the 2011 Norman Mailer Writing Award for High School Teachers. Full- and part-time teachers are invited to enter the competition, in which one winner will be selected from five finalists to receive a $10,000 cash prize; travel and lodging to attend the Norman Mailer Center’s Annual Gala on November 8, 2011, in New York City; and a fellowship to the prestigious Norman Mailer Writers Colony during the summer of 2012. The entry deadline is Wednesday, July 27, 2011, Noon CST.

NCTE Members Invited to Share Their Memories or Speculate on the Future
NCTE Centennial logoAs part of the NCTE Centennial celebration coming in 2011, members are invited to offer brief memories of NCTE, speculations about the future of literacy education and NCTE, "Then and Now" piece, and brief historical essays in the National Gallery of Writing.

See "I relearn, rethink, and am renewed," a "Then and Now" story about teaching by NCTE member R. Joseph Rodriguez.

I enjoy learning from other educators from other parts of the world. I hope to get more updates in my inbox; it would be great to apply some of the research findings in my class.

The "Ideas" sections is amazing because it is a nice collection of ideas for varied ages but easily adaptable to all levels.
