The founders of the National Council of Teachers of English acted with passion for language teaching, with care for our nation’s general student body, and with resolve to expand educational opportunities when they formed the Council in Chicago on December 2, 1911. In tribute to their redoubtable spirit and in honor of all who have helped our organization stay both committed to the founders’ ethos and productively adaptive, I wholeheartedly welcome you to NCTE’s centennial convention and celebration, which are organized around the theme “Reading the Past, Writing the Future.”
As indicated in the 2011 Call for Proposals, I aim to help coordinate a set of offerings that feature testimony, inquiry, reflection, experimentation, analysis, and speculation. We all know that these are perilous times for public education and for teachers at all levels, so the convention represents a perfect moment to consider our collective progress, reflect on our setbacks, and renew our commitment to serving students as well as we can. We will push toward our best understanding of such matters as reading instruction, writing initiatives, literature study, rhetoric, technology, assessment, and professional development. We will ponder the links among literacy learning, diversity, informed citizenship, democracy, and social justice. And unavoidably–surely with fervor–we will consider government policy and the political challenges that lie ahead for the Council and the education enterprise at large.

The 2011 NCTE Annual Convention will be held November 17-20, 2011 in Chicago, Illinois at Chicago Hilton Hotel and the Palmer House. Sessions will be held at both of these locations.
