Top 10 Country Artists Who Aren't Superstars ... But Should Be

Peruse your local record store (if you still have one) and in between countless copies of country's top-selling discs, you'll find the CDs or albums by artists who have been forgotten -- or worse, never quite discovered at all. Success in the music business is a proverbial crap-shoot and some never catch the break they so richly deserve. With that in mind, The Boot counts down 10 of our favorite unsung acts of the past few years.

Standout Song: 'Space'

Taste of Success: She wrote 'Stupid Boy,' a Grammy-winning Top 5 hit for Keith Urban.

What You're Missing: A voice that's as graceful as it is gritty and songs that'll reach right inside and tear out your heart. She's also one of the sweetest, cutest, funniest women you'll ever meet.

Luke Bryan Announces 'Tailgates & Tanlines' Release Date

Rick Diamond, Getty Images

Luke Bryan's third studio album 'Tailgates & Tanlines' will be released August 9. The announcement came during a live video chat with fans, which included the singer's acoustic versions of two new tunes: 'Drunk on You' and 'Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye.'

While 'Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye' is one he's been playing live, 'Drunk on You' was a never-before-heard tune. "It's a song that a buddy of mine, Rodney Clawson, [co-wrote] and the second I heard it I knew it was something I was going to cut," Luke told the fans who tuned into his Facebook page. "We feel it will be a fun summertime song."

From an undisclosed location on Nashville's Music Row, Luke's rendition of the song was as laid back and casual as the tune, which tells the story of a man who is admiring his girlfriend. The hook is "I'm a little drunk on you, and high on summertime."

Jack Ingram's 'Acoustic Motel' is Filled With New Music

Dan Steinberg, AP

Jack Ingram has found a new love: YouTube. The singer-songwriter has created a segment, the 'Acoustic Motel,' where he performs a different song -- sometimes it's new, occasionally it's a cover -- every week.

"The 'Acoustic Motel' is one of my favorite things to do," Jack tells The Boot. "This whole idea of what the Internet can do for music is great. I know it's a pain, because we can't figure out how to get paid for recorded music, but in the end someone is going to figure that out. The best part about it is it's such a great way to stay relevant with your fans, to stay in front of them and to turn other people on to what you're doing with just a keystroke."

The tunes Jack uploads every Monday range from covers of Paramore's 'The Only Exception' and Katy Perry's 'Teenage Dream' to his own. "This YouTube 'Acoustic Motel' we started has been great, because I've gotten to go back and learn old songs of mine that I hadn't played in forever," he explains. "You realize there was a reason you liked that song in the first place. To write a song and to be able to record, play it in front of a camera, and have it be heard is awesome."

Joanna Smith Borrows the Phrase 'Kissin' in Public'

Beth Gwinn, FilmMagic

As a 20-something, Joanna Smith has enough life experiences to keep her songwriting full of new ideas, but once in a while she does borrow from her friends' lives. One instance in particular, she borrowed a line -- 'Kissin' in Public' -- from another songwriter, who shall remain nameless.

"I think she's aware that it's about her, but I don't know," Joanna tells The Boot. "I would say her name, the only thing is that it was something she said about her boyfriend, and they've broken up now. When I tell this story, I always say this about her: if she's not writing a hit song, she's inspiring one. [laughs]"

The 'Gettin' Married' singer and our mystery tunesmith actually met thanks to another singer-songwriter. "She was actually introduced to me by Luke Bryan," Joanna explains. "She was one of my first friends in Nashville but we never wrote together. She and I hung out and she's always been that older girl, who's given me boy advice, that I've hung out with. We've never written together, though. Strangely enough, my cousin is her business manager; we have a lot of connections."

Jerrod Neimann Talks Grilling, Garth + Gold: A Day in the Life

Jace Freeman for The Boot

Jerrod Niemann pulls up to his record label's offices on this gorgeous, sunny Nashville day and quickly walks over to introduce himself, extending an easygoing hand as we exchange hellos and congregate with others to carpool to the first destination on a long, hectic day ahead.

The skulls on his well-worn cowboy boots are the only slightly ominous hint at a rebel nature in this fun-loving artist. And as he heads toward the car with his publicity rep for the 20-minute ride to the first of many interviews he'll complete before the day ends, he bumps into an old friend. Sony Music Nashville labelmate Josh Thompson also happens to be at the office this morning, so the two stop and exchange a quick hello and a hug before Jerrod jets off.

First stop is the home of Hazel Smith, where Jerrod is on deck as the guest for her popular CMT cooking show/movie mash-up, 'Southern Fried Flicks.' A beloved Music City media figure for 40 years, Hazel is as warm as a Southern hug, so when Jerrod walks through the door, the two immediately talk like old friends, even though they've just met. They quickly determine they have mutual buddies in common, which sets the tone for the informal chat/TV taping that will take place inside the small kitchen for the next hour.

Steel Magnolia Experience 'Last Night Again'

Arlene Richie/jpistudios.com

Steel Magnolia's Meghan Linsey and Joshua Scott Jones weren't amateurs when they won CMT's 'Can You Duet' competition. The couple had several self-penned tunes in their arsenal, but they needed a little help writing their current single 'Last Night Again.'

"We went into our label with five songs of ours that we had decided on," Joshua tells The Boot. "Our A&R rep at Big Machine heard them and then asked who we wanted to write with, because we needed to get a few more songs together. We were like, [in unison] 'Hillary Lindsey.' She's awesome."

"Every freaking video I was watching on GAC and CMT, at the end it was her name on the songwriting credit," Meghan explains. "She's the coolest chick ever. She's laid back. We went over to her house and we wrote 'Last Night Again' in a few hours out in her garage."

Rascal Flatts Were 'Movin' On' With First Opry Performance

Jeff Gentner, Getty Images

Rascal Flatts have enjoyed unparalleled success as a country music trio -- scoring five multi-platinum selling albums, and watching all 27 of their singles land in the Top 20 on the charts. But it wasn't their huge crossover hit, 'Bless the Broken Road,' or the star they received on the Hollywood Walk of Fame last year that made the three guys -- Gary LeVox, Jay DeMarcus and Joe Don Rooney -- feel like they had reached superstar status. Rather, it was their first Opry performance -- long before any of their biggest milestones were even in the works -- that sealed the deal for the men.

"What was weird about it was the kids were lining the aisles and standing up front, which I had never seen before," Jay DeMarcus tells GAC. "I think it was right around the time when 'I'm Movin' On' came out, and we sort of saw our sales and our popularity and visibility go from next to nothing to huge all of a sudden. I think that was a time for me that I stopped and went 'Wow! We're doing something special here.' Not just a couple of Top 10 singles, we've got one that was really impacting people now."
