Jim Barach's Outlook from the Storm Team Weather Center

Scattered Showers Or Storms Today...More Rain For The Weekend...

A warm front in the vicinity will be the focal point for showers and storms this afternoon and evening. The showers will be widely scattered unlike Tuesday's severe weather outbreak, and the threat of any of the storms reaching severe levels is weak. Skies will stay mostly cloudy overnight with the possibility of a few scattered showers with the low temperature staying at a mild 63 degrees. A cold front will move into and through the area on Friday which will bring a better chance of showers and thunderstorms. Skies will be mostly cloudy, and the additional clouds along with the rain showers will drop the high temperature down to 79 degrees.
The weekend will be cooler and very wet as an upper level low pressure system will move over the region in the wake of the cold front. The low will bring in cooler air along with cloudy skies which will drop the high temperature down to 74 degrees. There will also be off and on rain showers that could bring between a half inch to an inch of rainfall to the region. Sunday will also be cloudy with rain showers that could again bring a half inch to an inch of rainfall. The high temperature will drop to 70 degrees with the clouds, showers and cool air. The abundant rain showers could cause more flooding, especially in areas that are already soaked from persistent spring rains, mostly in southern Ohio.
Monday will find the low pressure system still in the region which will make for another day of cloudy skies and rain showers. The low will move a bit off to the east which will mean two things. The first is that there will be cooler air moving in behind the low which will drop the high temperature all the way down to 64 degrees. The cooler air will also be drier which will mean less in the way of rainfall totals. We should pick up between a tenth and a quarter inch of rainfall. Tuesday will see the low still in the vicinity, but also off to the east which will mean another day of cloudy skies and scattered rain showers. Even cooler air will flow in around the low which will drop the high temperature all the way down to 62 degrees.
Wednesday will see the low pressure system retrograde slightly, or move a bit back to the west. Skies will be mostly cloudy but there won't be as much available moisture with the system so there should be just scattered showers and a little more sunshine. The high temperature will warm a bit to 68 degrees. Thursday will be partly cloudy as high pressure builds in as the low pressure system finally pulls out. It will be dry with the high temperature warming again to 73 degrees. Friday will be partly cloudy as high pressure will again be the dominant weather feature. The high temperature will continue its warming trend up to 76 degrees. The next weekend will see another low pressure system start to move into the region. That will bring in mostly cloudy skies with more rain showers and a high temperature of 72 degrees.

A quick look back at yesterday's forecast shows that we saw severe weather move in for the afternoon and evening on Tuesday as expected. Skies remained cloudy with showers during the overnight as forecast with the low temperature dropping to 63 degrees. That came in three degrees warmer than the forecast low temperature of 60 degrees. Wednesday was partly cloudy as forecast with the potential for some afternoon and evening showers still in the forecast. The high temperature came in at 84 degrees, one off the forecast high temperature of 85 degrees. Huntington's high temperature was a bit warmer at 86 degrees. Charleston picked up .03" rainfall after midnight and Huntington reported .34" rainfall.

Tonight: Skies will be mostly cloudy with some widely scattered showers possible. The clouds and showers will keep the overnight low temperature at a mild 63 degrees.

Thursday: A warm front in the vicinity will make for partly cloudy skies and could also cause a few scattered afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms. The high temperature will warm to 88 degrees.

Friday: A trailing cold front will move into the region which will make for mostly cloudy skies and some more widespread showers and thunderstorms. The storms could bring between a quarter and a half inch to some areas along with cooler temperatures due to the clouds and showers. The high temperature will drop to 79 degrees.

Saturday: The weekend will start off with cloudy skies and rain showers as an upper level low pressure system moves in over the region. That will make for the potential of heavy rain, in the range of a half inch to an inch which could set off areas of localized flooding in the wake of recent heavy rains. The high temperature will drop to 74 degrees.

Sunday: The upper low will still be right over the region which will mean more clouds and showers which could bring another day of heavy rainfall totals. Some areas could pick up another half inch to an inch of rainfall which could again make for localized flooding. The high temperature will drop to 70 degrees.

Monday: The low pressure system will still be in place to start the work week which means another day of cloudy skies and rain showers. The high temperature will drop to 64 degrees as the low moves off to the east, pulling in cooler air behind it.

Tuesday: The low will still be off to the east which will mean more clouds and rain showers and even cooler air moving into the region. The high temperature will drop again to 62 degrees.

Wednesday: The low pressure system will retrograde slightly back to the west which will keep skies mostly cloudy along with another day of scattered rain showers. The high temperature will warm a bit to 68 degrees.

Thursday: The low will finally start to move off to the east which will allow high pressure to move in over the region. That will bring back partly cloudy skies and dry conditions. The high temperature will warm to 73 degrees.

Friday: High pressure will again be the dominant weather feature over the region. Skies will be partly cloudy with the high temperature warming to 76 degrees.

Saturday: A storm system will move into the region which will bring back mostly cloudy skies and showers or thunderstorms. The high temperature will cool slightly to 72 degrees.

One Final Note: I would like to make a personal plea here for an event coming up this weekend. Saturday will be the Great Strides Walk to fight Cystic Fibrosis in Charleston and Huntington. I would like to invite everyone to attend the walk in Charleston at the Kanawha State Forest in the pool area which starts at 8:00 AM and in Huntington at Ritter Park at the Pavilion which starts at 9:00 AM. I would be very happy for any of you to make a donation to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in the memory of my wife Karen. Just look up the CFF website on your computer. Thank you in advance for your help and support and hope to see you there!
