Camillus Health Concern

SPECIFIC SERVICES INCLUDE:

Founded in 1984, Camillus Health Concern, Inc. (CHC) is sponsored by the Brothers of the Good Shepherd, under the auspices of the United States Catholic Church, and has been a leader in providing primary health care services to persons in Miami-Dade County who are homeless or have low income. CHC has been a Health Care for the Homeless grantee through the Department of Health and Human Services' Bureau of Primary Health Care since 1989 and was designated as a Federally Qualified Health Center in 1996.

CHC offers primary health care services at the Greer Building, its state-of-the-art medical center, 336 NW 5th Street in downtown Miami, which opened in June 1998. An active Consumer Advisory Board (CAB) strengthens the quality of services offered to persons who are homeless.

The organization also operates satellite sites at four organizations providing services to persons who are homeless including: Better Way of Miami, Camillus House, Mother Theresa Sisters of Charity and The Salvation Army. Patients are referred to the main center as needed.

Medical outreach services and HIV/AIDS interventions are provided at community, street and shelter sites throughout Miami-Dade County where persons who are homeless congregate and reside. In addition, behavioral health services are provided under the Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) Team, which provides intensive, recovery-based treatment that empowers each person to live independently in a dignified setting of their choice.

CHC's health care providers are specially trained to meet the unique health care and social service needs of persons who are homeless. Much emphasis is placed on providing culturally sensitive services. A tri-lingual staff is able to provide services in English, Spanish and Haitian Creole and all materials, including posted signs, educational brochures and health care forms, are printed in the three languages.

Camillus Health Concern is a Health Center Program grantee under 42 U.S.C. 254b, and a deemed Public Health Service employee under 42 U.S.C. 233(g)-(n)
