Poor Brussels. It’s the capital of a country that all too often has been a theater of war in Europe. This time the carnage created another opportunity for bellicosity from the U.S. candidates -- not just Republicans Trump and Cruz, but Democrat Hillary Clinton. In one way or another, they further distanced themselves from Obama’s message of open-handed engagement. That message featured in the defining speech of Obama’s presidency, delivered in 2009 in Cairo, but aimed at not only the Muslim world but the planet. If there is an “Obama Doctrine,” he enunciated it then -- a sunburst of optimism and empathy that soon thereafter won him the Nobel Peace Prize. But seven years later, as the 2016 presidential campaign gains in intensity, it’s clear that “Obamaism” is a lost cause, at least for now.
There are two Democrats whose resignation from office right now would do their party and country a service.
When the security, metro staff, and police instructed us to evacuate, I thought it was just a precaution. When I smelled the smoke, my New York mind was telling me it was just a track fire. It wasn't until I reached the street that the reality began to set in.
Men often take the advantages culture bestows on them for granted. They assume that they deserve to win at contests that are tilted in their favor. And they expect that those who lose at these unfair contests to accept defeat without becoming angry.
Try to imagine your local sheriff's department picking and choosing streets to patrol based on the (perceived) religious identity of the residents. It's not a pretty picture.
Rather than justifying a refugee ban, this latest attack should act as a reminder why the United States should take the lead on welcoming those fleeing ISIS terrorism. Accepting refugees is clearly important from a humanitarian standpoint, but it is also good for America's national security.
This majestic mountain setting attracts many gun-owning libertarians who rightly cherish the freedom of speech without which our liberties would perish. In addition, it has attracted a small community of anti-Semitic conspiracy theorists.
Trump's political campaign has devolved into a freak show that demonstrates our worst selves on the global stage. We also have to remember that the whole world (not just Americans) is watching. I get calls and emails from overseas wondering if Americans have lost their collective minds.
The Supreme Court will likely issue its decision in Whole Woman's Health the last week of June. LGBT people should care about women's right to safe and legal abortion not only because it's the right thing to do but because our two movements depend on each other.
At 32, Quincy decided that instead of giving up and waiting for the end that he would continue to live his passion: comedy. Despite ongoing chemotherapy, he didn't stop touring because he wants nothing more than to leave behind a comedic legacy that will not be forgotten.
How has a Third World country, subjected to decades of economic sanctions, accomplished this? Part of the answer lies in the post-revolutionary government's establishment of a comprehensive, universal health care system.
As shocked as I am by the sentence handed down to Otto Warmbier, I am even more shocked that a grown man, an American citizen, would not only voluntarily enter North Korea but also commit what's been described a "college-style prank." That kind of reckless gall is an unfortunate side effect of being socialized first as a white boy, and then as a white man in this country.
Another week, another Islamophobic assertion from the Republican presidential race. So, here's my message to Teddy-boy: The only protection Dearborn needs is protection from politicians like you! Dearborn is a model America should be following, not fearing.
When a Waterloo police officer shot my unarmed 22-year-old son Derrick in the back of the head and killed him in 2012, city officials knew just how to push the incident through the criminal justice system.
Today, thanks to the Affordable Care Act, women who are pregnant no longer face medical discrimination and don't have to fight for prenatal testing as I did. But what if I lived in a state where I needed, but my governor refused, prenatal care?
Trump and Cruz pretend to be opposed to the Republican establishment, but when it comes to taxes they're seeking exactly what that Republican establishment wants.
Last night, my husband of 32 years asked me if I was up for a 'Date Night.' Soon we were nestled into a secluded booth, in the bar of a popular restaurant. My husband, mused, 'I'll probably die before you do, but if for some reason you die first, I don't think I'll go too young on my second wife.'
So long as Muslims are viewed as subjects to be educated and lectured, the West will continue to misunderstand the dynamics of the Muslim world and of Muslims themselves.
I want to tell you that I am aware of what you do, and I am grateful for it all. What you manage on a day-to-day basis is no easy feat. Thank you, teacher. Thank you for all you do.
Weak leaders focus on all the things that are going wrong. Great leaders like Alan Mulally bring out the best in us. The most effective leaders apply the principles of positive psychology, ensuring their interactions with employees contain a healthy balance of positive and constructive feedback.
Trump the candidate is scary enough; Trump in the Oval Office would be far worse. Here would be a man who never apologizes, confronting a world in which we have much to apologize for. Trump would be our Insulter in Chief, the caricatured villain of the world's worst nightmares.
If we want to be able to say that we care about our children's health and education, we must address the state of the buildings that they learn and live in for hours every day.
Men can handle barf without batting an eye, but as soon as they experience that first sniffle, you better watch out.
I have erred in spending nearly three decades in what I see now as the "TB rut:" 1. Failing to imagine far better tools for diagnosis and treatment, 2. Allowing immediate cost issues to overwhelm the potential and real benefits of better treatment, and 3. Failing to engage patients and communities in TB elimination efforts.
How we innovate depends largely on how we define learning. If we believe that learning is defined by "student achievement," i.e. test scores or GPAs, then the vendors peddling their gadgets and code will continue to reap the profits of selling into our desires for better.
Dear Cherished Friends, The Republican Party has become intellectually and morally bankrupt, a mockery of its traditions -- corrosive to our society, our civility, and our capacity to govern. Unless and until it reverses course, you should take your votes and money and walk away.
Bernie Sanders has tied or beaten Hillary Clinton in a majority of the actively contested votes this election season. You doubt it? Okay, let me explain.
This is how things are in Brussels today. We found ourselves locked up in Parliament. Suspending activities. We called for moments of silence. We changed travel plans. We are waiting for news.
I am convinced Bernie Sanders, when the time is right, will do what Hillary did for Obama and not only endorse her but work hard for her and ask his supporters to do the same. The time for that may just not be quite right yet.
In the United States, we get the Freedoms To: TO choose our own careers, TO move whenever we like (if we can afford it), TO speak out against our government (even if it does no good) -- while Cubans get... yeah, pretty much none of that. In Cuba, meanwhile, they get the Freedoms From: FROM hunger, FROM illiteracy, FROM homelessness, FROM lack of medical care, FROM expensive education -- while we Americans get, well, exactly none of that, ever.
Perhaps because we both were engineering graduates of City College, Andy Grove and I hit it off. He was tough and confrontational, but also witty. He was opinionated but respected good journalism.
