Attorney General Calls on County Officials to Join DOJ in Working to Improve Juvenile Justice and Indigent Defense Systems
Attorney General Eric Holder outlined the need to reform the nation's juvenile justice system, as well as to ensure that quality legal representation is available, affordable and accessible to all Americans. In his remarks, he asked those attending the National Association of Counties Legislative Conference on Monday, March 7, to work with him and the Department's Office of Justice Programs to address these priorities. The number of cases in the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System�s (NamUs) two databases has reached a combined total of more than 15,000 and the number of registered users has grown to 10,000 since NamUs was launched in January 2009.

The Review Panel on Prison Rape will hold hearings in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, April 26, and Wednesday, April 27. The purpose of the hearing is to assist the Bureau of Justice Statistics in identifying common characteristics of rape victims and perpetrators in adult U.S. prisons with the highest and lowest incidence of rape.

The U.S. local jail inmate population has declined for the second consecutive year, the Justice Department's Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) announced today. The jail population declined by 2.4 percent in the 12 months ending June 30, 2010.
