WaterWatch -- Current Water Resources Conditions
Geography and Environment
maps, Streamflow, floods, United States, ...
WaterWatch (http://waterwatch.usgs.gov) is a U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) World Wide Web site that displays maps, graphs, and tables describing real-time, recent, and past streamflow conditions for the United States. The real-time information generally is updated on an hourly basis. WaterWatch provides streamgage-based maps that show the location of more than 3,000 long-term (30 years or more) USGS streamgages; use colors to represent streamflow conditions compared to historical streamflow; feature a point-and-click interface allowing users to retrieve graphs of stream stage (water elevation) and flow; and highlight locations where extreme hydrologic events, such as floods and droughts, are occurring. The streamgage-based maps show streamflow conditions for real-time, average daily, and 7-day average streamflow. The real-time streamflow maps highlight flood and high flow conditions. The 7-day average streamflow maps highlight below-normal and drought conditions. WaterWatch also provides hydrologic unit code (HUC) maps. HUC-based maps are derived from the streamgage-based maps and illustrate streamflow conditions in hydrologic regions. These maps show average streamflow conditions for 1-, 7-, 14-, and 28-day periods, and for monthly average streamflow; highlight regions of low flow or hydrologic drought; and provide historical runoff and streamflow conditions beginning in 1901. WaterWatch summarizes streamflow conditions in a region (state or hydrologic unit) in terms of the long-term typical condition at streamgages in the region. Summary tables are provided along with time-series plots that depict variations through time. WaterWatch also includes tables of current streamflow information and locations of flooding.

RadNet Map Interface for Near-Real-Time Radiation Monitoring Data
Geography and Environment
ORIA, ERAMS, weapons, gamma, ...
RadNet is a national network of monitoring stations that regularly collect air, precipitation, drinking water, and milk samples for analysis of radioactivity. The RadNet network, which has stations in each state, has been used to track environmental releases of radioactivity from nuclear weapons tests and nuclear accidents. In general, data generated from RadNet provide the information base for making decisions necessary to ensure the protection of public health. The system helps EPA determine whether additional sampling or other actions are needed in response to particular releases of radioactivity to the environment. RadNet can also provide supplementary information on population exposure, radiation trends, and other aspects of releases. The RadNet map interface provides access to near-real-time data (updated approximately hourly) on atmospheric radiation in monitoring locations.

Historical Climate Diaries and Journals
Geography and Environment
temperatue, journals, humidity, forts, snowfall, ...
Much of the weather and climate data recorded by the founding fathers of this country (Washington, Jefferson and Franklin to name a few) were archived in original manuscripts then microfilmed and stored at the National Archive and Records Administration (NARA). Those records available from NARA on microfilm have been imaged and placed on the Environmental Document Access and Display System (EDADS) system. To date, there are more than 52 million of those images on-line. These colonial diaries are a treasure trove to the climatologist seeking data on climate of the 19th century. They may contain pressure, temperature, winds, humidity, and precipitation data and/or anecdotal data.

Twentieth Century Reanalysis Project (Version 2)
Geography and Environment
CIN, MSL, volcano, soil temperature, humidity, ...
The Twentieth Century Reanalysis Project is an effort led by PSD and the University of Colorado CIRES Climate Diagnostics Center to produce a reanalysis dataset for the entire twentieth century, using only surface observations of synoptic pressure, monthly sea surface temperature and sea ice distribution. The observations have been collected with the support of the Atmospheric Circulation Reconstructions over the Earth initiative, and working groups of GCOS and WCRP. The Project uses a recently-developed Ensemble Filter data assimilation method which directly yields each six-hourly analysis as the most likely state of the global atmosphere, and also estimates uncertainty in that analysis. This dataset will provide the first estimates of global tropospheric and stratospheric variability spanning 1871 to present at six-hourly resolution (V2). In Version 2, data files are also produced for daily and monthly values of the variables. The first version has global coverage spanning 1908-1958, and two degree longitude-latitude horizontal resolution (V1).

Consent Decrees
Law Enforcement, Courts, and Prisons
policy documents, Fungicide, ...
EPA's Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance (OECA) cases and settlements webpage contains links to selected settlements resolving civil enforcement cases and, in some cases, complaints filed initiating civil judicial and administrative enforcement actions. Typically, the links are to settlements about which we have issued a press release. This is not a complete repository of all enforcement actions taken by or on behalf of EPA. Rather, it represents a subset of enforcement cases, taken civil judicially or administratively, which may be of national interest. Most of the settlements are civil judicial consent decrees resolving alleged violations of environmental laws (e.g., the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act). In some instances, the website includes significant enforcement actions resolved by the Environmental Appeals Board (EAB). In addition, please note that the cases and settlements webpage does not include: * Most administrative enforcement actions; * Most civil judicial cases resolving liability under CERCLA; * Criminal enforcement matters.

Reanalysis Intercomparison and Observations
Geography and Environment
CIN, MSL, ERA, longwave, volcano, radiation flux, ...
Reanalysis is a scientific method to combine observations and models for developing a comprehensive record of how weather and climate are changing over time. A reanalysis dataset typically extends over several decades or longer, and covers the entire globe from the Earth's surface to well above the stratosphere. Reanalysis products are used extensively in climate research and services, including for monitoring and comparing current climate conditions with those of the past, identifying the causes of climate variations and change, and preparing climate predictions. Recently, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Aeronautical and Space Administration (NASA), European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), and Japanese Meterological Agency (JMA) have produced new reanalysis datasets that, in total, span 1871 to present. It is crucial to our scientific understanding of climate variability and change that these new datasets be validated and compared with each other and with the underlying observations. International working groups of the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS, the climate element of the Global Earth Observing System of Systems) and the World Climate Research Program, and the Atmospheric Circulation Reconstruction over the Earth (ACRE) initiative need a community portal to exchange quickly and disseminate publicly results of such intercomparisons. NOAA's own mission and strategic goals regarding reanalyzes, as well as its leading role in the US Global Change Research Program, GCOS, WCRP, and ACRE, make NOAA the logical and obvious choice to serve a website dedicated to improving understanding of the international reanalysis datasets, including those recently generated by NOAA, the 20th Century Reanalysis and Climate Forecast System Reanalysis. The new website "reanalyses.org" will serve as a central portal for Reanalysis Intercomparison and Observations (RIO) by NOAA, NASA, ECMWF, JMA, and national and international scientists. The website should be outside the "noaa.gov" domain. It will help NOAA and the international scientific community to improve the climate science and services that reanalyzes underpin. NOAA strategic plans and US Global Climate Research Program plans to which NOAA Office of Atmospheric Research and the new NOAA Climate Service will respond specifically call for advances in understanding reanalysis datasets. The RIO will coordinate with the NOAA Climate Services portal to make the intercomparison and observation documentation public.
