Each month the Current Employment Statistics program surveys about 140,000 businesses and government agencies, representing approximately 410,000 individual worksites, in order to provide detailed industry data on employment, hours, and earnings of workers on nonfarm payrolls for all 50 States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and about 400 metropolitan areas and divisions.
Next Releases:
- Metropolitan Area Employment and Unemployment data for April 2011 are scheduled to be released on June 1, 2011, at 10:00 A.M. Eastern Time.
- Regional and State Employment and Unemployment data for April 2011 are scheduled to be released on May 20, 2011, at 10:00 A.M. Eastern Time.

In March 260 of the 372 metropolitan areas reported over-the-year increases
in nonfarm payroll employment, 101 reported decreases, and 11
were unchanged. Jobless rates were lower than a year earlier in 317
areas, higher in 44, and unchanged in 11.

In March 34 states reported over-the-month unemployment rate decreases, 7 had increases,
and 9 states and the District of Columbia had no change. Nonfarm payroll employment increased
in 38 states and decreased in 12 states and the district.
