Tiny X-ray Source Uses Piezoelectricity to Generate Radiation

Tiny X-ray Source Uses Piezoelectricity to Generate Radiation

Producing X-rays inside small devices is normally difficult because of high power electronics and vacuum tubes involved. Engineers at University of Missouri have developed a brand new way of generating X-rays using the piezolectric effect. It involves exciting a lithium niobate crystal using 10 volts of electricity and then releasing bursts of 100,000 volts of output that are converted into X-ray flashes.

The team believes that this technology may provide the opportunity for poorer regions of the world to have access to small and cheap X-ray devices, be a safer alternative in certain situations where medical radioisotopes are used, and maybe even lead to new dental X-ray scanners that are placed inside the mouth to fire the radiation outward.

Brainsway Deep TMS Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation System FDA Cleared to Treat Depression

Jerusalem, Israel based Brainsway finally won FDA clearance for its Deep TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation) to be used for treatment of drug resistant depression.

The Brainsway system received a similar approval in Europe three years ago and is also being used there to control neuropathic chronic pain. Additionally, the technology is being trialed for a variety of conditions like Alzheimer’s and bipolar disorder, and even for smoking cessation (see flashbacks below).

Philips Lifeline GoSafe Keeps Elderly Safe While Out and About

Philips Lifeline GoSafe Keeps Elderly Safe While Out and About

At CES in Las Vegas this week Philips unveiled the Lifeline GoSafe, a system that helps keep seniors in touch with emergency responders in cases of trips and falls. Similar to the old “I’ve fallen and can’t get up” device we’ve all seen on TV commercials a decade ago, the GoSafe has built-in cellular connectivity that only needs one press of the button to activate.  It also has integrated fall sensors that can automatically call for help.

It purportedly uses numerous technologies to help locate an individual in different situations and the neck-worn device is waterproof, works for a week on a charge, and will operate in just about any environment.

Philips Respironics CoughAssist T70 Cleared in U.S. as Alternative to Airway Suctioning

Philips Respironics CoughAssist T70 Cleared in U.S. as Alternative to Airway Suctioning

Coughing is an important physiologic mechanism by which the airways are cleared of secretions that can otherwise impair breathing and cause pneumonia. People with various neuromuscular diseases, spinal cord injuries, or those post-stroke can have trouble producing an effective cough, so manual suctioning is often performed.

Philips Respironics just received FDA approval for the CoughAssist T70, a system that generates air movement through the airway that’s similar to a natural cough and collects the phlegm that’s produced. The device uses sensors to detect the person’s breathing pattern and will synchronize the the push/pull of the cough so it feels natural. It works via a mask, or can connect to an endotracheal or tracheostomy tube.

Microarrays: A new avenue for prenatal diagnosis

Microarrays: A new avenue for prenatal diagnosis

Prenatal screening is an important part of any pregnancy. Typically, noninvasive techniques, such as examining Fetal Cells in Maternal Blood (FCMB), ultrasound, or nonstress tests are used to screen for a prenatal condition. Fetal karyotype testing, which detects major chromosomal mutations, is commonly used as a confirmatory test after abnormalities are detected through screening. Chromosomal microarray is another, relatively newer procedure, used in prenatal diagnosis of chromosomal abnormalities. It has been shown to be able to detect more genetic mutations in children compared to regular karyotyping, leading some to think it should be a first-line confirmatory test over karyotyping.

Now, a prospective cohort trial of over 4400 women recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine shows that microarray analyses are equally efficacious as karyotyping in identifying certain chromosomal abnormalities (aneuploidies and unbalanced rearrangements) and may provide additional structural chromosomal findings in patients with normal karyotypes. Microarray testing in fact identified important genetic anomalies missed by karyotyping in nearly 2% of pregnancies with the usual indications for diagnostic testing (such as advanced maternal age) and 6% of cases with abnormal ultrasounds.

WEB Intracranial Aneurysm Embolization System Proving Itself in Clinical Trial

WEB Intracranial Aneurysm Embolization System Proving Itself in Clinical Trial

Large intracranial aneurysms at a bifurcation of an artery require a gentle yet effective way to stop blood flow into the ballooning volume. A new intrasaccular flow disrupter called WEB from Sequent Medical of Aliso Viejo, California was recently subject to a clinical trial involving 20 patients with unruptured wide-neck bifurcation aneurysms.

The device, though looks like is made of two parts, is a single component made of nitinol and platinum using novel Microbraid technology that allows the creation of three-dimensional objects that exhibit specific mechanical properties. The WEB is suitable for both ruptured and unruptured aneurysms, works with traditional catheters and can be removed post-implantation as necessary. The WEB received the CE Mark in 2010 and is currently being utilized at select clinical centers.
