It was a three-day festival of Victorian-inspired fantasy and ingenuity. Canada’s first National Steampunk Exhibition, held this past weekend in Markham, Ontario, delivered an elaborate mix of wild gadgetry, exotic dancing, daring sideshow escapes, and mad tea parties. In one hall eccentric scientists gathered to compete in evil laughs while explorers enjoyed a mummy unwrapping in another. There were lessons in fashion and prop-making, chemical etching, and digital painting. You could take in a Victorian séance or partake in an evening of extraordinary gin-tasting. An unconventional convention it most certainly was and hopefully the first of many.

Tweet Or Vote

If you want to see the political commentary fly online, just wait until one of the major candidates makes an appearance on television then perform a search for any of the parties across Twitter or Facebook. The retweets, responses, and links seem to boil and expand with amazing speed. That social media is playing a role in this year’s election is without question, certainly in the way the parties spread their messages and react to each other, but has it become a substitute for having your say through a vote? If you’ve already spent days expressing yourself online, are you more or less likely to do so at the voting booth?

White iphone 4

After facing numerous production delays the white version of the iPhone 4 will finally go on sale in Canada this week, starting tomorrow Wednesday 27th. Promised as part of the smartphone's original release, the absence of the white version has inspired humourous discussions across the web, with articles equating it to mythical beasts like the unicorn or yeti, with false "sightings' and reports of white iPhones spotted in the wild in parts of Asia. For Apple the delay has been in "getting every detail right" as stated in a release today by Apple senior vice president Philip Schiller. Apple's obsession with design esthetics is notorious and their efforts to get the right shade of white to work in a finish that will last has earned them a few pokes, but it's part of the company's success in sales. Thankfully it's the same price as the black iPhone, there's no premium unicorn rate.

James Dyson Award

If you're a young inventor and you've already missed the deadline for Maker Faire Toronto, good news, you can still enter your idea for the upcoming 2011 International James Dyson Award. If that seems intimidating, know that Canadians have fared well with the competition in the past. Last year Canadian Rahim Bhimani made the finalists with a UV light system that eliminates bacteria and odour from athletic shoes. [More]

Well the PlayBook is certainly the easiest BlackBerry to use. In creating their first tablet RIM has discovered a refreshing simplicity, where what you need is laid out in front of you across a single screen. It’s like flying in a futuristic cockpit, where the windshield in front offers a clear view and the controls are merely a reach above or below.

Flip MinoHD

If you are planning to buy a Flip camcorder this year, do it now. Cisco, who bought the creators of the pocket camcorder in 2009, has announced this week their intentions to shut the Flip business down. Kick To Pick

It's a novel use of Smartphone technology put to ridiculous ends. Kick To Pick is a new iPhone app that claims it can detect the enthusiasm of unborn babies as they respond to suggested baby names. Developed by Nathan Parks in Leeds, England, it makes use of the iPhone's accelerometer, the sensor that allows it to detect motion, to register the "kicks" babies deliver to their expecting mothers. The idea is for a pregnant mother to lie down on her back and place the iPhone against her stomach. The app then randomly sorts through [More]

The popular social network has launched a new data centre to run their operations and have decided to take the opportunity to be as open about how their operation as they can.
