LOOSE DOG

When seeing a dog running loose, in a neighbor’s yard, in the street, or wandering alone somewhere that seems “out of place,” a lot of emotions take over.  Panic can set in wondering if the dog is all right.

Keeping pets safe, healthy and well-behaved at home is what Invisible Fence Brand strives for everyday.  They have an uncanny passion for dogs which is why they work so hard to keep yours safe.

Most people are cautious about their pet’s safety.  So, a wandering dog usually catches people’s attention.  If you see a wandering dog, it’s not recommended that you approach him/her.  Watch to see if the dog approaches you.  If a stray does approach you with a happy-go-lucky attitude, find a way to calmly restrain him.  If you have a spare leash with you, but the dog isn’t wearing a collar, loop it to make a lasso.  If you are close to home, you could lead him home or load him up in the car!

Many people tend to avoid calling animal control or their local animal shelter for fear that they will be put to death.  But every shelter has different policies.  Look for a no-kill shelter or find out if they have a call-back policy where they will call you if the dog doesn’t get adopted.  You can also look for breed-specific rescue groups—just Google search them online!  If you find an injured dog, you’ll definitely want to call animal control or your local veterinarian.

If you find a stray dog, you’ll want to keep the following things in mind:
- Never approach the dog head on, let them come to you
- If a stray DOES approach you, never turn and run, move slowly and calmly
- Avoid direct eye contact, abstain from sudden, jerky movements and don’t yell or make loud noises

If you take one of these strays in, you may need consulting or advice. Call Invisible Fence Brand for behavior advice if you have a new dog.  They have hundreds of behavior solutions, resources and contacts in the animal world to send you in the right direction with your new dog.  Call 585-271-1700 or log onto www.InvisibleFence.com.
