Ten Signs You're an Aging Gamer

excitebike-nintendo-aging-gamer.jpg
Yesterday was my birthday. That means another year in my life has come and gone, and I'm another year closer to the inevitable grave.

Although my life has taken many twists and turns within the span of a single year, one thing remains constant--I still play A LOT of video games.

Since I'm a few years away from reaching the big three-o, there are several characteristics about myself as an aging gamer that I'm beginning to notice. These habits, it seems, are specific to older gamers and probably don't make a whole lot of sense to the younger, more HALO-y crowd. If you're old enough to remember Nintendo Cereal, take a look for yourself. Do any of these apply to you? The following are 10 signs you're an aging gamer.

1. You Have Sprite Artwork Posted Somewhere
IMG_0575.JPG
A decal of Ness from Earthbound
Whether it's a decal on your laptop or a computer wallpaper, there's something about pixelated artwork that brings back fond memories of your gaming youth. Your fondest memories of Super Mario are the ones in which he's a blocky plumber with red overalls, not the modern cartoon-like one with blue overalls.

2. You Press the "A" or "X" Button Rapidly During Loading Screens

Tap A XBOX 360 Controller.JPG
You probably don't realize this, but you tap the "A" or "X" button on your controller  (XBOX360 and PS3, respectively) whenever you're impatiently waiting during a loading screen. Why is this? This habit must have been developed during the days of the NES, when we would rapidly tap the "A" button on the NES controller to bypass text as quickly as possible.

3. You Interchange the Term "1-Up," "Extra Life" and "Extra Man"
Mario 1 up.jpg
The term "lives" aren't as important in modern gaming as it used to be, since players get an infinite number of respawns in the most popular single-player campaigns. However, in older games, players had a finite number of retries called "lives," and once you're out of them, it's game over. You'd have to have to start all over. As an aging gamer, you've probably interchanged the words "1-up", "extra life" and "extra man" on numerous occasions.

4. You Know What the "Nintendo Smell" is
New Nintendo Smell.JPG
Take a whiff of this!
Whenever I bought a new NES or SNES game as a kid, the first thing I'd do after I opened the box was take a big whiff of everything inside. There's nothing quite like that "new Nintendo-game smell," and it hasn't been the same since the company began using optical media. I've always thought I was crazy, but apparently, former EGM writer Mark McDonald feels the same way I do about the "new Nintendo-game smell."

5. You Probably Don't Play Games Online With Strangers
Angry Gamer.jpg
THIS GAME MEANS EVERYTHING!!!
Not only because everyone online is an asshole, but also because your competitive skills ain't what they used to be. Your job, bills and nagging in-laws have all taken a toll on your precious ability to play competitive games such as Street Fighter as well as you used to.

I did that "tapping during the loading-screen" when I was a kid. But something happened since then, called "growing up" or "bringing up patience", so I haven't tried to fool myself or force the computer since I was lttle... :P

Also, not everyone online is an asshole in games. I think it depends more on what games you play, cause every "community" is quite different per game. For example, it's well known that there are the typical foul-mouthed so-called 13-year-olds in the Modern Warfare games. But take something like... say 'Left For Dead 2', and MOST people really play to play the game properly, and maybe 1 out of 10 are uncooperative or even abusive assholes. Well, maybe there's also a difference in console-kids and PC-people. But in any way, I have very little problem with random people online and won't judge until I've seen their behavior.

There are old gamers that stop playing modern computers that has a lot better things to do rather than playing computer games that's why he is not updated anymore when it comes to computer games.

I haven't play games online not because I'm not confident with my competitive skills. I just don't enjoy it. I think no matter on how are we if could keep on playing the same things that we had before ,you can even beat the young ones.

what makes me sad is knowing the golden years of video games are well behind us. most everything has been done, and the new generation of gamers are stuck with the same old games re-packaged and re-released every 6 months. Not that a younger gamer would notice this trend, but still...

Forgot to mention you play your old console games on your new desktop or laptop in an emulator on a computer system many times more powerful than the original console.

I have one more for your list:

You have gone out of your way to create a fully functioning Plug n Play emulation device out of an old SNES controller, fully loaded with games from each of your childhood consoles(NES, SNES, and Genesis for me). Just so you can be sure you can get your childhood game fix no matter who you are visiting.

I wish all of these applied to me.

I grew up with older gaming systems such as the NES, SNES, and Genesis. We didn't get an N64 until a few months before the Gamecube came out. I don't own any other company's stuff, such as an Xbox or Playstation, and my Wii goes largely unused. I do play online games, though, such as TF2 and...well, just TF2. I'll play my old systems when I want to really jump into a game. I just wish my batteries hadn't failed in my old cartridges...I had to redo my perfect game of LTTP.

Bollocks. I'm looking at the big four zero in the next couple of months and I still regularly get the top score or K/D on CoD, and I only ever play strangers; so mainly 13 year olds, I expect. Just turn the Game Voice down in the options menu and you won't feel like a paedo in the local school playground!

"would cost you 25 cents to play, and you'd get at least 20 minutes of quality playtime out of that."

Holy cow! I might have actually played video games when I was a kid if that was anything close to true...Instead I wondered who all these rich kids were, must have had endless rolls of quarters.

I probably spent a grand total of $2.00 on video games in machines when I was a kid, because it was always the same thing... put quarter in... "OK, now what's this game abo... oh. Game over already? Wtf. I'm not putting another quarter in THAT thing again. What a rip off.

If some of these games actually let you get more than 60 seconds of play for a quarter, I might have actually played.

If your first gaming love was a NES, you're still young. Atari 2600 ftw.

I agree with this list!!!....though I am aware that arcade games these days cost more than a quarter. I do mash buttons from time to time. Cuz loading screens suck major balls. And I know that Nintendo smell all to well!. And who does play there portable games in public??? that just screams " NOT GETTING LAID!!!".....

Disagree strongly with the online gaming. That's really all I play these days and I'm 29. Hell, there are entire groups of people over 25 that I play with online on a consistent basis.

im 14 and besides the Nintendo cereal i have everything... as long as you consider N64 retro, that and a retron3(NES SNES and genesis put together) but that was made more recently

Turning 30 this year, and I fit most of these. Although I do play FPS games with strangers online, 99% of my online co-op is with friends. Also, I do rock the iPhone for portable games, but I play them loudly and proudly in public. Especially NBA Jam, nobody looks at you funny when a BOOM-SHAKKA-LAKKA erupts from your phone.

TheMightyMonarch

Uhhh... really? First off: What idiot mashes his buttons during the loading screen? That wears the buttons out. Know how I know that? From 20 years experience playing games.

Secondly, of course arcades are more expensive. Ever been to a movie theater and just PASSED BY the arcade there? Just glance at a machine and it'll tell you it's a dollar for one play. But even then arcade games have been more than a quarter for 15+ years.

Also, chiptunes are popular with scrub new kids who have only been playing for a few years. It's "nerd cool/geek chic" music.

This list sucks.

28 and yes its weird that we feel old before we hit 30.Funny thing though i don't suffer from anything you said.I played ZX spectrum 48 an 128, amiga 500 and 1200, a master system, over here nintendo wasn't that famous.

i love online gaming, met alot of graet guys there, after all we are all getting old so we meet a lot of people the same age or older , so it's cool

Interesting how much of these that actually are correct. I did not know of Nintendo Cereal however, but the rest of them made me feel nostalgical.

Mmm.. the Nintendo Smell.

I am 31 and none of that pertains to me. I played games during the NES days. I love gaming online. A lot of those were odd to me. I also grew big on the Halo and Call of Duty games, something only the young crowd knows of. I do respect the old school games and once in awhile will hook up an old console but right now I have my PS3, 360, Wii, and Dreamcast hooked to my tv.

I am 23 and I grew up with the NES as my first console. Gaming really has changed.

It went like this for me:

NES:(played with family even my dad could play this one)N64: all my friends would come over and play.PS2/Xbox: System link 16 player halo. And the begginings of online play.360/ps3: Play online mostly but can still compete well. My dad and my sisters don't really play the newer games. But there is def an increase in girl gaming.

yeah it's kinda of depressing more young gamers don't notice it. I'm 21 and I still am tied of the lack of originality plagueing mainstream games.

53 here. 28 computers in my lifetime beginning with the Atari 400. I remember entering programming code from magazines and saving the prog. on a cassette tape just so I could have something new to play with. I've had every console except ColecoVision and only because I didn't like the controller configuration. Currently... 2 360's, 4 PC's including my second Alienware. Fond memories of playing Falcon 3.0 with me and my buddy's 386-40 over a modem line. It took forever to transfer the data back and forth before we could dogfight. It's been more fun than I can remember. Favorite game right now would have to be Red Dead Redemption.
