Since 1999, AFSA has sponsored a nationwide high school essay contest for students whose parents are not in the Foreign Service in order to create interest in the Foreign Service among our best and brightest high school students. In the twelve years since the contest began, we have received thousands of submissions from all over the country - all over the world, even - and we are continually impressed with the caliber of writing and research performed by these students.

The topic remained the same for the first eleven years of the contest. This year, we have revamped the topic and changed a few of our guidelines to challenge our students even more. Their performance in years past has been at such a high level that we feel confident in their ability to take on this new challenge and surprise us yet again with their skills.

To the right, you will find links to the most important information about the contest. The deadline for submissions is April 15, 2011. That means that mailed submissions must have a postmark of that date or earlier.
