New NBER Research23 April 2012 Alumni Giving and Undergraduate Financial AidJonathan Meer and Harvey Rosen analyze data on the alumni giving of a sample of 1993-2005 graduates of an anonymous research university who received some form of financial aid, specifically scholarships, loans, and campus jobs. Looking at gifts from the year after these students graduate until 2009, the researchers find that individuals who took out student loans were less likely to make a gift. Scholarship aid has little effect on the probability of donating but appears negatively correlated with subsequent gift size. Campus jobs do not have a strong correlation with giving.

This evidence suggests that implementing college-prep programs in existing urban schools can improve the long-run prospects for disadvantaged students.
