NY Fashion Week: Harper's Bazaar celebrates best covers since 1867

april-1965-cover-140-0907-de.jpgBEST COVER: Harper's Bazaar shows off its best covers through the years, including this one shot by famed photographer Richard Avedon.

Harper's Bazaar, the oldest continuously published fashion magazine in the world, has rolled out a Special Collector's Edition featuring its best covers from 1867 to 2011. It's a fitting time for the mag/book to hit stands during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York. Luckily, I snagged a copy while having breakfast with the magazine's publisher Valerie Salembier at the grand Hearst Tower in Manhattan. The magazine, which was started in 1867, initially focused on fashion and literature, she said. (What a great combination!) Inside the Best Covers issue, editor Glenda Bailey writes her favorite cover is the April 1965 issue (shown above) shot by famous photographer Richard Avedon.

Salembier, who comes to Houston next month for the Chronicle's Best Dressed luncheon, said Bailey also will debut a coffee-table book celebrating her 10 years with the magazine later this year. Harper's Bazaar Special Collector's Edition Best Covers 1867-2011, $12.95, is available at bookstores and airports magazine stands nationwide.

Esperanza Spalding tops Justin Bieber for Grammy, hair

MTV Shows

I wished I could have seen Justin Bieber's face when Jazz bassist, singer and composer Esperanza Spalding beat him out for the Grammy Award for Best New Artist Sunday. Esperanza who? While their music is vastly differently, Spalding and Bieber have attracted attention as much for their hair as for their music. Her hair is so much cooler, though. A few years ago, I had the pleasure of interviewing Spalding, a Portland native whose first name means "hope" in Spanish. The Afro-wearing artist blends jazz, world and soul music. Here's an excerpt from the interview:
Why jazz?
I was playing acoustic bass so the gigs I was getting were related to jazz; people always needed an upright bass. Jazz became a medium and a catalyst to keep playing with different people and discovering different sounds.
Anyone you want to work with?
I'd like to do more with Stevie Wonder and get nitty-gritty with him. Maybe Quincy Jones. André 3000. Ledisi. Yo-Yo Ma. The list is so long.
You entered Boston's Berklee College of Music at 16 and became a professor there at 20. What was that like?
It was a thrill to be able to share music, but I got put off on the academic setting. It can be limiting when you want to help students flourish.I didn't really have enough time to be the teacher and mentor I wanted to be. But I'll come back to teaching later.
Let's talk about your hair.
It has its own mind. I just let it do what it do. Sometimes it's an Afro, sometimes it's not.

NY Fashion Week: Style before the shows, and Valentine's Day advice from a legend

fash5.jpgHIGH STYLE: Brian goes cool.

fash6.jpgTHE SHOES: Ah, gold shoes.

fash4.jpgPOLISHED: Nathalie looks chic.

fash3.jpgWINTER WEAR: Daniel dons his cold-weather gear.

<fash2.jpgHEAD GEAR: Jen wears a floppy hat in winter.

fash7.jpgON THE RUNWAY: At the Cynthia Steffe runway show.

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York is a fashion lovers' dream. It's all about the shows and the fashion, but the people-watching is the best part. So I snapped a few photos of people who looked a bit stylish or at least tried before the Cynthia Steffe runway show. Then, I spent the evening at the amazing Harlem brownstone of Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist Les Payne and his family. He was a longtime NewsDay columnist and one of the founders of the National Association of Black Journalists. Having been married for 44 years, Payne had some Valentine's Day advice: "Marriage is about selection - finding the right person," he said. " And you don't do anything you can't continue." Great advice.
