Ever hear of a debit card swipe fee? I hadn't until this week--then again, I don't have a debit card. Basically, when you pay for stuff with a debit card, at say a Wal-Mart or Home Depot, the banks whack the retailer with a 2% fee for pleasure of offering debit card transactions. The retailers basically pass the expense to us through cost of their goods--so non-debit card users get charged too (I use a credit card so the retailers pay fees on that.
